Racine de Kudzu Standard (Pueraria mirifica): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Pueraria mirifica work in the body?

Pueraria mirifica contains potent phytoestrogens, particularly miroestrol and deoxymiroestrol, which structurally resemble human estrogen. These compounds bind to estrogen receptors (ER-alpha and ER-beta) throughout the body, producing estrogenic effects. The plant also contains isoflavones including puerarin, daidzein, and genistein that contribute to its hormonal activity. This receptor-binding mechanism explains its traditional use for female vitality and menopausal support. Evidence level: B.

Does Pueraria mirifica interact with medications?

Yes, Pueraria mirifica has significant drug interaction potential due to its strong estrogenic activity. It should not be combined with anticoagulants, as it may increase bleeding risk. Concurrent use with hormone replacement therapy or oral contraceptives may cause additive hormonal effects. Patients on tamoxifen or other hormone-sensitive cancer treatments should avoid this herb entirely. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining with prescription medications. Evidence level: B.

What is the recommended dosage for Pueraria mirifica?

The typical adult dosage is 25-100mg of standardized miroestrol extract daily, taken under medical supervision. Standardized extracts ensure consistent miroestrol content for reliable effects. Dosage should be individualized based on the specific condition and the patient's hormonal status. Self-prescribing is not recommended, particularly for premenopausal women or those currently on hormone therapies. Evidence level: B.

Is Pueraria mirifica safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

No, Pueraria mirifica is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The potent phytoestrogens, particularly miroestrol, can stimulate uterine tissue and potentially affect fetal development. The herb's strong estrogenic activity poses risks to hormonal development in the fetus or nursing infant. Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding should avoid this herb entirely. Evidence level: Traditional.

What are the side effects of taking Pueraria mirifica?

Common side effects relate to the herb's estrogenic activity and may include breast tenderness, menstrual changes, and uterine stimulation. Prolonged use may cause endometrial changes requiring medical monitoring. More serious concerns include potential stimulation of estrogen-sensitive tissues. Those with a history of estrogen-sensitive cancers, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids should avoid this herb. Side effects typically resolve after discontinuation. Evidence level: B.

What is Pueraria mirifica used for in Thai traditional medicine?

Pueraria mirifica has been used traditionally in Thai medicine for female vitality, anti-aging, and menopausal symptom relief. Its exceptionally high phytoestrogen content makes it valuable for addressing hot flashes, night sweats, and vaginal dryness associated with declining estrogen levels. Some traditions also use it for breast health support. Evidence level: B supports its use for menopausal symptoms, though medical supervision is recommended.

Résumé

Pueraria mirifica (White Kwao Krua) is a Thai medicinal plant rich in phytoestrogens used primarily to alleviate menopausal symptoms [PMID:31377923, PMID:29409850].

Contexte

Pueraria mirifica, also known as White Kwao Krua or white kudzu, is a medicinal botanical indigenous to Southeast Asia, specifically Thailand and Myanmar [PMID:42328653]. It is characterized by tuberous roots containing estrogen-like substances [PMID:21938956].

Usages traditionnels

It has been used in Thai traditional medicine and folklore for nearly one hundred years as a rejuvenating therapy for aged women and men, specifically for estrogen-related conditions and age-associated functional decline [PMID:31377923, PMID:22460444, PMID:42328653].

Composés actifs

The plant contains phytoestrogens, including isoflavonoids (such as puerarin, daidzin, daidzein, and genistin) and chromenes (specifically miroestrol, deoxymiroestrol, isomiroestrol, and (+)-7-O-Methylisomiroestrol) [PMID:36218384, PMID:36950953, PMID:28152387, PMID:32077760, PMID:25036114]. Kwakhurin is also identified as a unique marker compound [PMID:30585546, PMID:33020994].

Mécanisme d'action

Pueraria mirifica exhibits estrogenic activity via its phytoestrogens [PMID:30585546]. Puerarin may improve Metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) by remodeling the intestinal microenvironment to promote mitochondrial fusion and autophagy [PMID:40121054]. Ethyl acetate extracts have been shown to dose-dependently reduce NO production and iNOS expression in microglial cells by attenuating IRF-1 induction [PMID:36232220].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve AVasomotor symptoms (hot flushes, night sweats)

A Phase II study showed a decrease in the modified Greene climacteric scale for patients receiving 50 mg or 100 mg daily over six months [PMID:14971532]. A systematic review of eight studies indicated climacteric scores were reduced by approximately 50% compared to baseline [PMID:29409850].

Preuve BVaginal health in postmenopausal women

Pueraria mirifica (20, 30, or 50 mg) decreased vaginal dryness symptoms and increased the vaginal maturation index after 24 weeks [PMID:17415017]. A 6% vaginal gel significantly decreased the pulsatility index (PI) and resistance index (RI) of vaginal arteries compared to placebo at 12 weeks [PMID:35550707].

Preuve DHypercholesterolemia (Rabbit Model)

Daily intake of 100 mg/kg/day of White kwao krua alleviated LDL oxidative susceptibility and plasma LDL levels and improved vasculature [PMID:32953566].

Preuve DBone Health

In vitro and animal studies suggest puerarin inhibits bone resorption and improves bone structure, potentially reducing osteoporosis risk [PMID:34994179].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

In a Phase I study, no major laboratory abnormalities were noted except for one case of transiently increased creatinine and one case of increased blood urea nitrogen [PMID:17710964]. One study reported no significant difference in adverse effects between the herb and placebo groups [PMID:17415017]. However, side effects of dietary supplements have been reported by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare, Japan [PMID:32434998].

Posologie et administration

Clinical studies have utilized oral capsules at doses of 20, 30, 50, or 100 mg once daily [PMID:17415017, PMID:14971532]. A 6% vaginal gel has also been used [PMID:35550707]. No PubMed data available. Consult a healthcare provider.

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence is strongest (Level A/B) for the alleviation of menopausal vasomotor symptoms and improvement of vaginal health. Preclinical evidence (Level D) suggests potential benefits for lipid profiles, bone health, and anti-inflammatory effects in microglia.
