Toxicodendron vernicifluum
The source of traditional Asian lacquer, whose sap (processed) is used in Korean traditional medicine for cancer and circulation.
Lacquer tree (Toxicodendron vernicifluum) sap, after processing to remove urushiol, is used in traditional Korean medicine for blood stasis, abdominal masses, and pain. Modern research focuses on its flavonoids, particularly fisetin, which shows senolytic and anticancer potential. However, raw sap is highly allergenic, and use requires strict medical supervision.
Fisetin and other flavonoids from lacquer tree exhibit senolytic activity by inhibiting the PI3K/Akt and NF-κB pathways, inducing apoptosis in senescent cells. They also modulate COX-2 and iNOS, reducing inflammation. Urushiol, the allergenic component, acts as a hapten, triggering T-cell-mediated contact dermatitis via covalent binding to skin proteins. Processed extracts may exert anticancer effects through cell cycle arrest and pro-apoptotic signaling.
