Lactuca serriola
Parent species of cultivated lettuce with mild sedative properties similar to L. virosa.
Lactuca serriola, commonly known as prickly lettuce, is a wild lettuce species with mild sedative and analgesic properties attributed to its sesquiterpene lactones (lactucin, lactucopicrin) and flavonoids. It has been used traditionally for insomnia and pain relief, though clinical evidence remains limited.
Lactucin and lactucopicrin are thought to act as partial agonists at GABA-A receptors, enhancing inhibitory neurotransmission and producing mild sedation. These compounds may also inhibit cyclooxygenase (COX) enzymes, contributing to analgesic effects. Additionally, flavonoids present in the herb provide antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity, which may support its traditional uses.
