Zeste de citron (Citrus limon peel): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does lemon peel work as a digestive aid?

Lemon peel contains d-limonene, a compound that stimulates gastric motility and helps neutralize gastric acid, making it effective for digestive support. The volatile oils in lemon peel act as carminatives, reducing gas and bloating by relaxing smooth muscle in the gastrointestinal tract. Additionally, bitter compounds stimulate bile production, supporting liver function and fat digestion. Evidence level: C (preliminary evidence from in vitro and animal studies).

Does lemon peel interact with medications like grapefruit does?

Lemon peel contains similar furanocoumarins to grapefruit, which can potentially affect how certain medications are metabolized by the liver. While concentrations are lower than grapefruit, caution is advised with medications carrying grapefruit interaction warnings, particularly statins, calcium channel blockers, and immunosuppressants. Consult a healthcare provider before using concentrated lemon peel supplements if taking prescription medications. Evidence level: C.

What is the recommended dosage for lemon peel tea?

The traditional adult dosage for lemon peel tea is 1-3 grams of dried peel steeped in hot water for 10-15 minutes, consumed up to three times daily. For concentrated d-limonene extracts, typical doses range from 1000mg daily. Culinary amounts used in cooking are considered safe and appropriate for general consumption. Evidence level: Traditional use with preliminary clinical evidence for d-limonene.

Is lemon peel safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Culinary amounts of lemon peel are considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when consumed as food or in moderate tea amounts. The vitamin C and other nutrients can be beneficial. However, concentrated supplements or d-limonene extracts should be discussed with a healthcare provider, as safety data for high-dose supplementation during pregnancy is limited. Avoid topical lemon oil applications during pregnancy. Evidence level: Traditional use supports safety at food doses.

What are the health benefits of lemon peel?

Lemon peel offers antimicrobial, digestive, and liver-supportive benefits due to its active compounds including d-limonene, hesperidin, and vitamin C. Traditional Mediterranean and Italian folk medicine uses include treating digestive upset, supporting liver function, and acting as a natural antimicrobial agent. The antioxidants in lemon peel, particularly eriocitrin, may provide cellular protection. Evidence level: C (preliminary evidence supporting traditional uses).

Can lemon peel cause side effects or allergic reactions?

Common side effects from excessive lemon peel consumption include gastrointestinal upset, heartburn, or acid reflux due to its acidic nature and essential oil content. Topical application of lemon oil can cause photosensitization when skin is exposed to sunlight, increasing sunburn risk. Those with citrus allergies should avoid lemon peel entirely. Moderate culinary consumption is generally well-tolerated by most individuals. Evidence level: Traditional use and case reports.

Résumé

Lemon peel (Citrus limon) is a byproduct of the juice industry rich in bioactive compounds, including polyphenols and limonene, which exhibit antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial properties [PMID:37627600, PMID:40625698].

Contexte

Lemon peel is the outer layer of the Citrus limon fruit, consisting mainly of parenchyma structured by a density gradient [PMID:35406971]. It is a significant byproduct of the fruit juice industry, often accounting for approximately 50% of the total fruit mass [PMID:40282741].

Composés actifs

Lemon peel contains limonene (specifically (R)- and (S)-enantiomers) [PMID:40191954, PMID:36968159], flavonoids, phenolic acids, polyphenols, ascorbic acid, and carotenoids [PMID:37627600, PMID:35002453, PMID:36941518]. Specific identified inhibitors include neoeriocitrin, isonaringin, naringin, hesperidin, neohesperidin, and limonin [PMID:31999045].

Mécanisme d'action

Lemon peel extracts may act by inhibiting enzymes such as butyryl cholinesterase (BuChE), monoamine oxidases (MAO)-A/B, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) 1/2 [PMID:37687161]. It has been shown to modulate the NF-κB/PPAR-γ pathway in obese models [PMID:39968210] and block the ROS-stimulated MAPK/ERK pathway to protect retinal cells [PMID:38790643]. In gastric cancer cells, it modulates intracellular redox homeostasis by decreasing hydrogen peroxide-related ROS and increasing superoxide anions [PMID:41596250].
