Glycyrrhiza glabra (DGL)
Specially processed licorice with glycyrrhizin removed for safe GI use.
Deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) is a specially processed extract of Glycyrrhiza glabra with glycyrrhizin removed, making it safe for gastrointestinal use without mineralocorticoid side effects. It is primarily used for healing gastric and duodenal ulcers, soothing GERD and heartburn, and treating canker sores, owing to its flavonoid, isoflavone, and chalcone content that provide mucosal protective and anti-inflammatory actions.
DGL promotes ulcer healing by stimulating mucosal defense mechanisms, including increasing mucus secretion and enhancing blood flow to the gastric mucosa. Its flavonoids and chalcones inhibit Helicobacter pylori growth and reduce inflammation via cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) and lipoxygenase pathways. The isoflavones also exhibit antioxidant activity, scavenging free radicals and protecting epithelial cells from damage. Additionally, DGL forms a protective barrier over ulcerated tissue, shielding it from acid and pepsin.
