Ligusticum sinense
TCM herb for wind-cold headache particularly at vertex (top of head); paired with Notopterygium.
Ligusticum sinense is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used primarily for wind-cold headaches, especially vertex headaches, often in combination with Notopterygium. Its active compounds include phthalides such as ligustilide, cnidilide, and neocnidilide, as well as ferulic acid, which contribute to its analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antipyretic properties. Evidence is limited (C) based on small clinical and preclinical studies.
Ligustilide acts as a calcium channel blocker and GABA-A receptor modulator, leading to smooth muscle relaxation and antispasmodic effects. Ferulic acid inhibits cyclooxygenase (COX) and lipoxygenase (LOX) pathways, reducing prostaglandin and leukotriene synthesis, thereby providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic actions. Additionally, phthalides may modulate TRP channels and serotonin receptors, contributing to antipyretic and headache-relieving effects.
