Herbe de Masterwort (Peucedanum ostruthium): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Masterwort work as a digestive remedy?

Masterwort contains bitter compounds and furanocoumarins that stimulate digestive secretions. The bitter principles trigger the vagus nerve reflex, increasing gastric acid, bile, and pancreatic enzyme production. Imperatorin and ostruthin contribute to antispasmodic effects on smooth muscle in the digestive tract. These mechanisms support its traditional use as a digestive bitter. Evidence Level C is based on pharmacological studies and traditional use rather than clinical trials.

Can Masterwort interact with blood thinners or anticoagulant medications?

Yes, Masterwort poses significant interaction risks with anticoagulant medications. The furanocoumarin compounds, including imperatorin, possess blood-thinning properties that may potentiate the effects of warfarin, heparin, and antiplatelet drugs like aspirin, increasing bleeding risk. Additionally, furanocoumarins can inhibit cytochrome P450 enzymes, potentially altering metabolism of various pharmaceuticals. Patients on anticoagulants should avoid Masterwort entirely. Evidence Level C.

What is the recommended dosage for Masterwort root?

Traditional adult dosages include 1-3 grams of dried root prepared as a tea, or approximately 2ml of tincture taken daily. The dried root is typically decocted for 10-15 minutes to extract active compounds. Due to limited modern clinical data and potential phototoxicity, start with lower doses and do not exceed recommended amounts. Evidence Level C based on traditional use and pharmacopoeial standards.

Is Masterwort safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

No, Masterwort is contraindicated during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The furanocoumarin content poses risks of uterine stimulation and potential fetal harm. These compounds can pass into breast milk and may cause photosensitivity reactions in nursing infants. Additionally, the blood-thinning effects present additional pregnancy risks. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should avoid all Masterwort preparations. Evidence Level C.

What are the side effects of taking Masterwort?

Masterwort can cause phototoxic skin reactions due to furanocoumarins, resulting in severe sunburn-like symptoms, blistering, and skin discoloration when exposed to sunlight or UV light. Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea and diarrhea, may occur at higher doses. Blood-thinning effects can increase bruising and bleeding tendency. Discontinue use immediately if skin sensitivity develops and avoid sun exposure for 24-48 hours after ingestion. Evidence Level C.

What was Masterwort used for in traditional Alpine medicine?

Masterwort was revered as a panacea in medieval European and Alpine traditional medicine, earning the name 'Imperial Herb.' It was used as a general tonic, digestive bitter to stimulate appetite and relieve indigestion, diaphoretic to promote sweating during fevers, and remedy for infections. The root was traditionally prepared as a decoction or tincture. These historical applications are supported by Evidence Level C based on ethnobotanical records and traditional use.

Résumé

Masterwort (Peucedanum ostruthium) is a perennial herb native to alpine regions of Europe, traditionally used for gastrointestinal and respiratory disorders [PMID: 32354017, 26493217].

Contexte

Peucedanum ostruthium (also known as Imperatoria ostruthium) is an Apiaceae species native to the mountains of central and southern Europe [PMID: 35807516, 36616243]. It is cultivated as an ornamental plant and used in the production of spirits and bitters [PMID: 26493217, 21425828].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used in the Alpine region of Austria and Italy to treat disorders of the gastrointestinal and respiratory tract [PMID: 32354017, 30342388]. In Sweden, it was used as an ethnoveterinary remedy for horses and cattle from the 17th to 19th centuries, as well as in some human remedies [PMID: 36616243].

Composés actifs

The plant contains coumarins including osthole, ostruthin, imperatorin, isoimperatorin, oxypeucedanin, and oxypeucedanin hydrate [PMID: 21425828, 28513464]. Other identified compounds include phthalides (cnidilide, Z-ligustilide, senkyunolide) [PMID: 17340269] and essential oil components such as sabinene, 4-terpineol (rhizome), beta-caryophyllene, and alpha-humulene (herb) [PMID: 11837677, 40648055].

Mécanisme d'action

Extracts from roots and rhizomes inhibit the expression of inflammatory markers E-selectin and VCAM-1 by interfering with NF-κB signaling, specifically affecting IκBα phosphorylation, degradation, and resynthesis, as well as the nuclear translocation of RelA [PMID: 32825714]. Some compounds act as dual inhibitors of cyclooxygenase (COX) and 5-lipoxygenase (5-LOX) [PMID: 9690339, 35807516]. Osthole may modulate the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway [PMID: 30922159].
