Melanthium virginicum
Calculateur gratuit de posologie — doses adultes et enfants selon le poids.
Melanthium virginicum contains steroidal alkaloids, including jervine, along with saponins that are responsible for its biological activity. These compounds affect cellular membranes and demonstrate toxic effects on cardiac tissue and the nervous system. The alkaloids can cause paralysis and cardiac toxicity by interfering with normal nerve signal transmission and muscle function. Due to its extreme toxicity profile, the mechanism has primarily been studied in toxicology research rather than therapeutic applications. No safe therapeutic mechanism has been established (Evidence Level C).
Due to the extreme toxicity of Melanthium virginicum, internal use is contraindicated and no safe therapeutic drug interaction data exists. The cardiac-toxic alkaloids, including jervine, could potentially interact dangerously with cardiac medications such as digoxin, beta-blockers, and anti-arrhythmic drugs. The plant's severe toxicity profile makes systematic interaction studies unethical to conduct. External use as a traditional insecticide has limited documented drug interactions, but any absorption through skin could pose serious risks (Evidence Level C).
There is no safe internal dosage for Melanthium virginicum due to its extreme toxicity profile. Traditional Native American use was strictly limited to external applications, such as use as an insecticide. Some tribes used tiny external doses for fever with extreme caution. Ingestion can cause cardiac toxicity, paralysis, and death. This herb should never be taken internally, and external use should only be considered under professional guidance. No standardized therapeutic dosage exists (Evidence Level C, Traditional).
Melanthium virginicum is absolutely unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The plant contains potent alkaloids, including jervine, which can cause severe toxicity. These compounds may cross the placenta and could potentially cause fetal harm, developmental abnormalities, or pregnancy loss. The cardiac and neurotoxic effects pose serious risks to both the pregnant person and developing fetus. Breastfeeding individuals should also avoid this herb entirely, as toxic compounds may pass into breast milk. Complete avoidance is strongly recommended (Evidence Level C).
Melanthium virginicum is highly toxic and can cause severe, potentially fatal side effects if ingested. Documented adverse effects include cardiac toxicity, which can lead to dangerous heart rhythm abnormalities, and progressive paralysis affecting the nervous system. Ingestion has been associated with death in documented cases. Even external application carries risks if compounds are absorbed through the skin. Traditional use was limited to external applications with extreme caution. This herb is not appropriate for self-medication due to its narrow margin between any potential benefit and lethal toxicity (Evidence Level C, Traditional).
