Nitraria tangutorum (Nitraria tangutorum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Nitraria tangutorum support liver health?

Nitraria tangutorum berries contain betaine, flavonoids, and polysaccharides that contribute to hepatoprotective effects. Betaine helps maintain liver cell membrane integrity and supports methylation pathways involved in detoxification. The flavonoids provide antioxidant activity that reduces oxidative stress on liver tissue. Traditional use in Tibetan and Mongolian medicine spans centuries for liver support, though clinical evidence remains limited (Evidence Level C). The combined action of these compounds may help protect liver cells from damage and support overall hepatic function.

Does Nitraria tangutorum interact with any medications?

Limited research exists on drug interactions with Nitraria tangutorum. Due to its hepatoprotective properties and effects on liver metabolism, it may potentially interact with medications processed through the liver, including certain statins, blood thinners, and immunosuppressants. The alkaloid content could theoretically affect cytochrome P450 enzyme activity. Individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before using Nitraria tangutorum supplements. No specific clinical drug interaction studies have been conducted (Evidence Level C).

What is the recommended dosage for Nitraria tangutorum berries?

The traditional dosage for Nitraria tangutorum dried berries is 5-10 grams prepared as a tea, taken twice daily. To prepare, steep the dried berries in hot water for 10-15 minutes before consuming. This dosage is based on traditional Tibetan and Mongolian medicinal practices rather than standardized clinical trials. Individuals should start with the lower end of the dosage range and adjust based on tolerance. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing recommendations.

Is Nitraria tangutorum safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Nitraria tangutorum is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. The alkaloid content and other bioactive compounds may pose risks to fetal development. Traditional use has not established safety for pregnant women, and no clinical safety data exists for use during pregnancy. Breastfeeding women should also avoid this herb due to insufficient safety information and potential transfer of active compounds through breast milk. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should consult their healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements.

What are the side effects of Nitraria tangutorum?

Nitraria tangutorum may cause mild gastrointestinal upset in some individuals, including nausea, bloating, or loose stools, particularly when taken in higher doses or on an empty stomach. These effects are typically mild and resolve with continued use or dose reduction. The herb is contraindicated in individuals with existing liver disease, as its effects on hepatic function have not been adequately studied in this population. Discontinue use if adverse reactions occur and consult a healthcare provider. Long-term safety data is limited (Evidence Level C).

Résumé

Nitraria tangutorum is a drought- and salt-tolerant desert shrub from Northwest China and the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with reported medicinal, economic, and ecological value [PMID:39161968, 34174646].

Contexte

Nitraria tangutorum Bobr. (family Nitrariaceae) is a dominant halophytic shrub in China's desert and semi-desert regions, characterized by a well-developed root system and high tolerance to salinity, alkalinity, cold, and drought [PMID:39161968, 34071650].

Usages traditionnels

The plant produces berries that are described as edible and medicinal [PMID:26388259, 36721098].

Composés actifs

Chemical analysis of the fruits has identified 45 constituents, including hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives, flavonols, flavonoids, $\beta$-carboline alkaloids, tryptophan derivatives, and amino acid derivatives [PMID:34174646]. The fruits are also rich in anthocyanins, specifically cyanidin-3-[2''-(6'''-coumaroyl)-glucosyl]-glucoside (C3G) [PMID:33714113], and contain various amino acids [PMID:31035340]. Polysaccharides (NTP) composed of mannose, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose have also been isolated [PMID:34216671].

Mécanisme d'action

N. tangutorum-derived polysaccharides (NTP) may protect against lung injury by suppressing the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) signaling pathway [PMID:34216671]. Anthocyanin-rich extracts (ANF) exhibit neuroprotective effects by reducing the overexpression of receptor for advanced glycation end products (RAGE) and amyloid-beta 42 (A$\beta$42) in the hippocampus [PMID:33714113].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DInfluenza A/H3N2

Extracts of N. tangutorum significantly reduced the infectivity of the human influenza A/H3N2 virus in vitro [PMID:35215953].

Preuve DLPS-induced Acute Lung Injury (ALI)

Polysaccharides (NTP) attenuated tissue damage, inhibited inflammatory cytokines, and promoted anti-oxidative responses in mice [PMID:34216671].

Preuve DPostprandial Blood Glucose (Diabetes)

Fruit extracts (NTB-Z and NTB-C) at 400 mg/kg markedly lowered postprandial blood glucose levels in diabetic animals and inhibited sucrase and maltase in vitro [PMID:34174646].

Preuve DMemory deficits (d-Galactose induced)

Anthocyanin-rich extracts (ANF) relieved memory deficits and reduced oxidative stress (ROS and MDA) in the hippocampus of rats [PMID:33714113].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

In vitro screening showed that extracts of N. tangutorum at concentrations lower than 125 $\mu$g/mL demonstrated no significant toxicity in MDCK cells [PMID:35215953].

Synthèse des preuves

The current evidence is based entirely on in vitro studies and animal models (Level D), focusing on anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, neuroprotective, and antiviral properties. No human clinical trials are reported.
