Origanum Vulgare Hirtum (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does oil of oregano kill bacteria and fungi?

Oil of oregano from Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum works primarily through carvacrol, which disrupts bacterial cell membranes and increases permeability. This causes cellular contents to leak, leading to cell death. Carvacrol and thymol also interfere with fungal cell walls and inhibit spore germination. Laboratory studies demonstrate broad-spectrum activity against pathogens including Candida species, E. coli, and Staphylococcus aureus. Evidence Level: C (preclinical studies).

Can I take oil of oregano with blood thinners or anticoagulants?

Oil of oregano should not be combined with anticoagulant or antiplatelet medications. The herb may increase bleeding risk by affecting platelet aggregation. Patients taking warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or similar blood-thinning medications should avoid oregano oil supplements. Additionally, oregano may interact with diabetes medications and antihypertensives. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining herbal supplements with prescription medications. Evidence Level: C (theoretical based on mechanism).

What is the recommended dosage for oil of oregano supplements?

The typical adult dosage for oil of oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) is 200–400mg daily of standardized oil, typically divided into 2–3 doses. Alternatively, 3–5 grams of dried herb can be prepared as tea. Oil of oregano should always be diluted in a carrier oil or taken with food to reduce burning sensation and gastrointestinal irritation. High-carvacrol formulations are preferred for therapeutic use. Evidence Level: C (traditional use and expert consensus).

Is oil of oregano safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Oil of oregano is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. The emmenagogue properties of carvacrol and thymol may stimulate uterine contractions and potentially induce menstruation or miscarriage. There is insufficient safety data for breastfeeding, so avoidance is recommended. Pregnant women should also avoid culinary amounts significantly above normal food seasoning levels. Women trying to conceive should consult a healthcare provider before using oregano therapeutically. Evidence Level: C (traditional contraindication).

What is Origanum vulgare hirtum used for medicinally?

Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum, also called Greek oregano, is used primarily for its antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Traditional and modern applications include treating respiratory infections, digestive disorders, and fungal conditions like candidiasis. The high carvacrol content makes this subspecies more therapeutically potent than common oregano. It is also used for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Most evidence comes from laboratory and animal studies rather than human clinical trials. Evidence Level: C.

What are the side effects of taking oil of oregano?

Common side effects of oil of oregano include burning sensation in the mouth and throat, nausea, and stomach upset. These effects are more pronounced when undiluted oil is taken. Topical application may cause skin irritation, redness, or contact dermatitis in sensitive individuals. Long-term use may affect gut flora balance. Due to potential bleeding effects, discontinue use at least two weeks before scheduled surgery. Seek medical attention if severe allergic reactions occur. Evidence Level: C.

Résumé

Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum, known as Greek oregano, is a medicinal and culinary herb characterized by high essential oil content and strong antioxidant and antimicrobial activities [PMID:33203184, 33668450, 42131873].

Contexte

Greek oregano (Origanum vulgare subsp. hirtum) is an aromatic herb native to the Mediterranean region, though it is now cultivated globally, including in the temperate climates of Central Europe [PMID:31917463, 33203184]. It is highly valued for its essential oil (EO) and is used for culinary, medicinal, and ornamental purposes [PMID:42131873].

Usages traditionnels

It is commonly used as a spice for flavoring food products and in various traditional medicine applications in Eurasia [PMID:22126122, 31917463].

Composés actifs

The herb is rich in secondary metabolites, including volatile organic compounds and polyphenols [PMID:22126122]. Its essential oil is dominated by the carvacrol chemotype, often containing carvacrol, thymol, p-cymene, and γ-terpinene [PMID:31099414, 39407547, 40807296]. Non-volatile phenolic compounds are dominated by rosmarinic acid, with other identified compounds including salvianolic acid B, lithospermic acid B, chlorogenic acid, and isovitexin [PMID:33668450, 39520005].

Mécanisme d'action

Active phenolic compounds in the essential oils may target bacterial cells through membrane disruption, quorum sensing inhibition, and interference with virulence factors [PMID:40919200]. Additionally, carvacrol, p-cymene, and cis-sabinene hydrate have shown in silico binding affinities to α-glucosidase, α-amylase, AChE, and BChE [PMID:41805627].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DType 1 Diabetes (Animal Model)

An ethyl acetate extract of Greek oregano prevented streptozotocin-induced diabetes in C57BL/6 mice [PMID:27219840]

Preuve BRumen Fermentation (Animal Model)

Dietary supplementation of dried Greek oregano plants in goats increased protease activity and ammonia concentration in the rumen [PMID:29030881]

Preuve DBacterial and Fungal Infections (In Vitro)

Essential oils and extracts exhibit antibacterial activity against pathogens such as Pseudomonas syringae, Xanthomonas hortorum, Erwinia carotovora, and Candida albicans [PMID:39407547, 33668450, 28675464, 40871483]

Preuve DFungal Plant Pathogens (In Vitro)

Greek oregano essential oil showed significant activity against Microcyclosporella mali spores [PMID:40807296]

Synthèse des preuves

The current evidence is primarily based on in vitro studies and animal models (Level B and D), focusing on the phytochemical profiling and antimicrobial/antioxidant properties of the herb. There are no human clinical trials provided in the source material.
