Papaver bracteatum
An Iranian poppy species containing thebaine, a precursor for pharmaceutical opioids; no analgesic effect itself.
Papaver bracteatum is an Iranian poppy species primarily valued as a commercial source of thebaine, a precursor for semisynthetic opioids such as oxycodone. Unlike Papaver somniferum, it does not produce morphine or codeine and has no direct analgesic effects. Its key active compounds include thebaine, oripavine, and flavonoids.
Thebaine acts as a partial agonist at mu-opioid receptors but with high toxicity and convulsant activity, precluding its direct therapeutic use. In pharmaceutical synthesis, thebaine is chemically modified to produce safer opioids like oxycodone and naloxone. Oripavine is a related alkaloid with similar properties. Flavonoids present in the plant may have minor antioxidant effects but are not clinically relevant.
