Patikan Cina (Euphorbia thymifolia): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Patikan Cina work for asthma?

Patikan Cina (Euphorbia thymifolia) contains bronchodilatory compounds including quercetin and myricetin, which may help relax airway smooth muscles. The herb also contains tannins and gallic acid with anti-inflammatory properties that may reduce airway inflammation and support respiratory function. Traditional use suggests it helps clear mucus from respiratory passages. Evidence level C indicates these mechanisms are supported primarily by traditional use and preliminary research rather than extensive clinical trials.

Can I take Patikan Cina with asthma medications?

Limited research exists on Patikan Cina drug interactions. Due to its bronchodilatory compounds like quercetin, this herb may have additive effects when combined with prescription asthma medications or bronchodilators. The tannin content may also interfere with absorption of certain medications if taken simultaneously. Patients using albuterol, inhaled corticosteroids, or other respiratory medications should consult a healthcare provider before adding Patikan Cina to their regimen.

What is the recommended dosage for Patikan Cina tea?

The traditional adult dosage for Patikan Cina is 1-2 cups of herb tea daily for respiratory conditions. For wound healing, a topical poultice can be applied directly to the affected area. Standardized commercial extracts are not widely available, so traditional preparations remain the primary form of use. Always follow package instructions for commercial products. Evidence level C supports these traditional dosing practices based on historical use rather than clinical trials.

Is Patikan Cina safe during pregnancy?

Patikan Cina is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be strictly avoided. The herb contains compounds that may stimulate uterine contractions or cause adverse pregnancy outcomes. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Patikan Cina due to insufficient safety data. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements containing Euphorbia thymifolia.

What are the traditional uses of Patikan Cina?

Patikan Cina has been used traditionally in Southeast Asian medicine across the Philippines, Indonesia, and India for treating asthma, respiratory conditions, and promoting wound healing. Traditional practitioners also use it for diarrhea and gastrointestinal complaints. The herb is typically prepared as a tea for internal use or applied as a topical poultice for external wounds. Evidence level C indicates these uses are supported primarily by ethnobotanical knowledge and traditional practice.

What side effects does Patikan Cina cause?

Patikan Cina may cause mild gastrointestinal side effects including nausea, stomach discomfort, or loose stools in some individuals. These effects are typically associated with oral consumption and are generally mild. The herb is contraindicated for children under 6 years of age and pregnant women. Topical application for wound healing is generally well-tolerated, though skin sensitivity may occur in some individuals. Discontinue use if adverse reactions develop.

Résumé

Euphorbia thymifolia is a tropical herb used in traditional medicine for various ailments, showing antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiviral activities in experimental models [PMID:12432232, 27618898, 24501446].

Contexte

Euphorbia thymifolia L. (Euphorbiaceae), also known as laghududhika or choti-dudhi, is a small, branched, hispidly pubescent, prostate annual herb [PMID:24501446].

Usages traditionnels

In Ayurveda and folk medicine, it is used to treat bronchial asthma, cough, diarrhea, bleeding piles [PMID:30671367], worm infections, and as a stimulant or astringent [PMID:24501446]. It is used in India and Indonesia as a galactogue to improve the quality of colostrum [PMID:30000943], and in Bangladesh for the treatment of diabetes and pain [PMID:22313890]. It is also used in traditional Chinese medicine for rheumatoid arthritis [PMID:38643905].

Composés actifs

Identified compounds include jatrophane-type diterpenoids (euphothymifols A and B, euphthymifolols A-E, euphthymifolone A, euphoscopin F, L, and E) [PMID:40608911, 40085800, 41507717], abietane-type diterpenoids [PMID:41507717], alkaloids (aurantiamide, anabellamide) [PMID:33350239, 41507717], isocoumarins, thymol derivatives, ellagic acids [PMID:33350239], cinnamic acid derivatives (thymofolinoates A and B) [PMID:23157007], and the pseudoguaianolide 6-O-angeloylplenolin [PMID:38643905].

Mécanisme d'action

The herb may suppress inflammatory responses via upregulation of Phase II enzymes and modulation of NF-κB and JNK activation in microglia [PMID:27618898]. 6-O-angeloylplenolin inhibits osteoclastogenesis by suppressing c-Src/NF-κB/NFATc1 pathways [PMID:38643905]. It may also modulate the Keap1-Nrf2 pathway to exert antioxidant effects [PMID:41511542].
