Pedalium Murex (Pedalium murex): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Pedalium murex work to improve male fertility?

Pedalium murex contains active compounds including diosgenin, vanillin, pedalitin, and flavonoids that may support male reproductive health. Diosgenin is a steroidal saponin precursor that may influence testosterone synthesis and spermatogenesis. The herb's flavonoids demonstrate antioxidant properties that could protect sperm cells from oxidative damage. Animal studies suggest potential spermatogenic effects, though human clinical trials are limited (Evidence Level C). The exact molecular mechanisms require further research.

Does Pedalium murex interact with any medications?

There is currently limited research on specific drug interactions for Pedalium murex. Due to its potential effects on hormone levels and urinary function, it may theoretically interact with hormone therapies, diuretics, or medications affecting kidney function. The herb has not been extensively studied in combination with pharmaceutical drugs. Patients taking prescription medications should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using Pedalium murex supplements to ensure safety and avoid potential interactions.

What is the recommended dosage of Pedalium murex powder?

The typical adult dosage of Pedalium murex is 3-6 grams of powdered herb taken twice daily, based on traditional Ayurvedic practice. This dosage range has been used historically for supporting male reproductive health and urinary function. However, standardized clinical dosing guidelines are not well established due to limited human trials (Evidence Level C). Dosage may vary depending on the specific formulation and individual health status. Always follow product label instructions or consult an Ayurvedic practitioner for personalized dosing recommendations.

Is Pedalium murex safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Pedalium murex is not considered safe during pregnancy and is contraindicated for pregnant women. The herb has traditionally been used to support male reproductive health and may affect hormonal pathways. Due to insufficient safety data and potential effects on reproductive hormones, pregnant women should avoid this herb entirely. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Pedalium murex, as safety during lactation has not been established. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy should consult their healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements.

Can Pedalium murex help treat kidney stones?

Pedalium murex has been used traditionally in Ayurvedic medicine for managing kidney stones and urinary disorders. The herb is believed to possess lithotriptic (stone-dissolving) and diuretic properties that may help flush out small stones and support urinary tract health. Some preliminary animal research suggests potential protective effects on kidney tissue, but well-designed human clinical trials are lacking (Evidence Level C). While traditional use supports its application for urinary concerns, individuals with kidney stones should seek proper medical evaluation and not rely solely on herbal remedies.

What are the side effects of Pedalium murex?

Pedalium murex is generally well-tolerated when used at recommended doses. The most commonly reported side effect is mild digestive upset, including nausea or stomach discomfort, particularly when taken on an empty stomach. No serious adverse effects have been documented in traditional use, though comprehensive safety studies are limited (Evidence Level C). Individuals with sensitive digestive systems may want to take the herb with food. Discontinue use if you experience persistent or severe symptoms and consult a healthcare provider.

Résumé

Pedalium murex, commonly known as Gokhru or Large Caltrops, is a medicinal shrub native to India, Mexico, and tropical Africa used traditionally for reproductive and urinary disorders [PMID:21967701, PMID:29864930].

Contexte

Pedalium murex (family: Pedaliaceae) is a fruit-bearing annual herb and shrub found in the Deccan region of Southern India and parts of Ceylon [PMID:21967701, PMID:29864930].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used to treat cough, cold, and as an antiseptic [PMID:21967701]. It is reported as a cure for reproductive disorders including male impotency, nocturnal emissions, gonorrhoea, and female leucorrhoea [PMID:21967701]. Other traditional applications include the management of urinary tract disorders, gastrointestinal tract disorders [PMID:21967701], gastric ulcers, asthma, and heart problems [PMID:29864930].

Composés actifs

Phytochemicals include diosgenin, vanillin, quercetin, ursolic acid, caffeic acid, and amino acids such as glycine [PMID:21967701]. Other identified components include flavonoids, tannins, coumarins, alkaloids, lignans [PMID:35015385], polyphenols [PMID:40287109], and pedalitin [PMID:32127759].

Mécanisme d'action

The herb exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, spermatogenesis-inducing, aphrodisiac, smooth muscle relaxing, and androgenic properties [PMID:31989693]. It has been shown to inhibit the UreC gene expression and urease production in Proteus mirabilis [PMID:32127759]. In silico analysis suggests potential anti-diabetic kidney disease (DKD) activity via the inhibition of TNF-α and NF-κB [PMID:42070473].
