Phyllanthus Emblica (Phyllanthus emblica): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Phyllanthus emblica work as an antioxidant in the body?

Phyllanthus emblica (amla) exerts its antioxidant effects primarily through its exceptionally high vitamin C content (approximately 1800mg per 100g) and polyphenolic compounds including emblicanin A and B, ellagic acid, and gallic acid. These constituents neutralize free radicals and support the body's endogenous antioxidant enzyme systems. The herb's Rasayana (rejuvenative) properties in Ayurveda are attributed to this antioxidant capacity, which may support cellular protection, liver function, and healthy aging. Evidence level: C.

Does Phyllanthus emblica interact with blood thinners or diabetes medications?

Yes, Phyllanthus emblica has clinically relevant interactions. Due to its vitamin C content and effects on clotting factors, it should be avoided by individuals taking blood thinners such as warfarin. For those on diabetes medications, amla may enhance glucose-lowering effects and cause mild hypoglycemia. Blood glucose should be monitored closely, and medication adjustments may be necessary. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining with these medications. Evidence level: C.

What is the recommended daily dosage of Phyllanthus emblica powder or extract?

The standard adult dosage for Phyllanthus emblica is 1-3 grams of dried fruit powder daily, or 500mg of a standardized extract taken twice daily. As one of the three components of Triphala, it is often combined with Terminalia chebula and Terminalia bellirica in equal proportions. Dosage may vary based on the specific formulation and intended use. Start with lower doses and adjust based on individual tolerance. Evidence level: C.

Is Phyllanthus emblica safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Phyllanthus emblica is generally considered safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding when consumed in food amounts or at recommended supplemental doses. The herb has a long history of traditional use in Ayurvedic medicine without reported adverse effects in pregnant or nursing populations. However, as with any supplement during pregnancy, consult a qualified healthcare provider before use, especially if you have underlying health conditions or are taking medications. Evidence level: Traditional.

What are the main health benefits of Phyllanthus emblica (amla)?

Phyllanthus emblica is traditionally used as a rejuvenative tonic supporting healthy aging, eye health and vision preservation, digestive function, and liver health. As one of the richest plant sources of vitamin C, it provides potent antioxidant support. In Ayurveda, it is also valued for promoting hair health and preventing premature graying. Modern research suggests potential benefits for metabolic health, though clinical evidence remains preliminary. Evidence level: C.

Résumé

Phyllanthus emblica, commonly known as Indian gooseberry or Amla, is a medicinal plant native to India and Southeast Asia recognized for its potent antioxidant and therapeutic properties [PMID: 35624683, 37727852].

Contexte

Phyllanthus emblica (also known as Emblica officinalis) is a tree in the Phyllanthaceae family that produces stone fruits rich in vitamin C and polyphenols [PMID: 34480995, 37727852]. It is widely distributed across tropical and subtropical regions, including India, China, Malaysia, and Thailand [PMID: 37954853].

Usages traditionnels

In indigenous systems such as Ayurveda, Unani, and folklore, it is used to treat common cold, fever, cough, asthma, bronchitis, diabetes, dyspepsia, colic, flatulence, hyperacidity, peptic ulcer, skin diseases, leprosy, anemia, hepatopathy, jaundice, diarrhea, dysentery, cardiac disorders, and premature greying of hair [PMID: 34480995, 20506691, 21317655]. It is also used as a tonic to restore vitality and vigor [PMID: 20506691, 27320046].

Composés actifs

The plant contains high levels of vitamin C (ascorbic acid), polyphenols, tannins, flavonoids, phenolic acids, alkaloids, and polysaccharides [PMID: 37727852, 39720042, 39069705, 40829453]. Specific identified compounds include phyllembelic acid, phyllembelin, rutin, curcuminoids, and emblicol [PMID: 20506691].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include free radical scavenging, induction of apoptosis, inhibition of cancer cell proliferation, and modulation of oncogenic signaling genes [PMID: 28609132, 34839775]. It also acts via Phase I and II enzyme modifications, anti-inflammatory actions, regulation of the cell cycle, and suppression of methylglyoxal (MG)-derived advanced glycation end products (AGEs) [PMID: 34839775, 36738163].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve CCancer Prevention

In multiple rodent models, P. emblica prevented tumor incidence, number, and volume at various organ sites [PMID: 34839775].

Preuve DCognitive Decline (Obesity-induced)

Water extract of Indian gooseberry fruit and gallic acid significantly ameliorated learning and memory deficits and reduced brain MG and AGE levels in HFD-fed rats [PMID: 36738163].
