Boerhavia repens
Creeping variety of punarnava found throughout tropical Africa, Asia and Australia; used similarly to B. diffusa for diuretic and liver conditions.
Punarnava Mishri (Boerhavia repens) is a creeping herb used in traditional Ayurvedic and African medicine for its diuretic, hepatoprotective, and anti-inflammatory properties. Its active compounds include boeravinones, punarnavoside, and flavonoids, which contribute to its therapeutic effects on kidney and liver health. Evidence is limited to pilot studies and traditional use (Level C).
Boeravinones inhibit phosphodiesterase-4 (PDE4), reducing cAMP breakdown and enhancing diuresis. Punarnavoside exhibits hepatoprotective activity by upregulating antioxidant enzymes (SOD, catalase) and decreasing lipid peroxidation. Flavonoids suppress inflammation via inhibition of COX-2 and NF-κB pathways, while liriodendrin may contribute to nephroprotective effects by modulating oxidative stress.
