Scilla bifolia
A European woodland spring bulb used in homeopathy for cardiac and urinary conditions.
Scilla bifolia is a European woodland bulb containing cardiac glycosides such as scilliroside and glucoscillaren, traditionally used in homeopathy for cardiac insufficiency and as a diuretic. Its active compounds exert digitalis-like effects on myocardial contractility and renal function, but the plant is highly toxic and limited to homeopathic dilutions.
Scilliroside and related bufadienolides inhibit Na+/K+-ATPase, increasing intracellular calcium and enhancing cardiac contractility. Homoisoflavones may contribute to diuretic effects via renal vasodilation. The narrow therapeutic index and risk of arrhythmias restrict use to highly diluted homeopathic preparations.
