Snail Vine (Centella asiatica extract): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Centella asiatica work to repair skin?

Centella asiatica contains triterpenoid compounds—madecassoside, asiaticoside, and asiatic acid—that stimulate collagen synthesis and fibroblast proliferation. These active compounds promote wound healing by accelerating tissue repair and strengthening the skin barrier. They also possess anti-inflammatory properties that reduce redness and calm irritation. The concentrated TECA (titrated extract of Centella asiatica) form delivers these benefits through topical application. Evidence level: C.

Does Centella asiatica interact with any medications?

Topical Centella asiatica preparations have minimal documented drug interactions. Because Centella affects wound healing and collagen production, individuals using topical corticosteroids or prescription skin medications should consult a healthcare provider before combining treatments. Oral Centella supplements may interact with sedatives, diabetes medications, and cholesterol-lowering drugs, but these interactions do not apply to topical CICA formulations. Evidence level: C.

How often should I apply Centella asiatica cream or serum?

Centella asiatica (CICA) creams and serums can be applied once to twice daily to clean, dry skin. For sensitive or damaged skin, begin with once daily application to assess tolerance, then increase frequency as needed. Apply a thin layer to affected areas and allow absorption before adding other products. Follow specific product instructions, as concentrations vary between formulations. Evidence level: C.

Is Centella asiatica safe during pregnancy?

Topical Centella asiatica preparations are generally considered safe during pregnancy. The active compounds work locally on the skin with minimal systemic absorption. There is no evidence of harm to the developing fetus from topical application. However, consult your healthcare provider before use, as with any skincare product during pregnancy. Oral Centella supplements require separate medical consultation. Evidence level: C.

Can Centella asiatica help with acne scars?

Centella asiatica may improve the appearance of acne scars through its collagen-stimulating and wound-healing properties. The triterpenoid compounds promote fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis, supporting skin remodeling and reducing visibility of atrophic scars. Results vary by individual and scar type. For best outcomes, use consistently as part of a comprehensive skincare routine. Evidence level: C.

Is Centella asiatica good for sensitive skin and redness?

Centella asiatica is well-suited for sensitive skin due to its soothing and anti-inflammatory properties. Madecassoside and related compounds help calm irritation and reduce visible redness by modulating inflammatory responses. CICA formulations strengthen the skin barrier, making them ideal for reactive or compromised skin. Most users tolerate Centella well, though mild tingling may occur initially. Evidence level: C.

Résumé

Centella asiatica is a medicinal herb recognized for its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and dermal-regenerative activities [PMID:41516082, PMID:32528628].

Contexte

Also known as Gotu kola or tiger grass extract, Centella asiatica is a tropical medicinal plant native to Southeast Asia, South Africa, and Madagascar [PMID:32528628, PMID:32100931].

Usages traditionnels

It is used in the Ayurvedic system for its rejuvenating, sedative, anxiolytic, and memory-enhancing properties [PMID:37318144]. It is also applied in Oriental and Western medicine for wound healing, gastrointestinal illness, and dermatological disorders [PMID:41304567].

Composés actifs

The extract contains triterpenoid saponins (including asiaticoside, madecassoside, asiatic acid, and madecassic acid), flavonoids, phenolic acids, triterpenic steroids, amino acids, and sugars [PMID:27168678, PMID:34764648, PMID:35190633].

Mécanisme d'action

Centella asiatica acts by inhibiting pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-α [PMID:32033291, PMID:41516082]. Madecassoside specifically enhances wound healing and protects keratinocytes via the phosphorylation of ERK and the AMPK/mTOR pathways [PMID:40667819]. It also modulates P2X3 and NaV1.7 in the trigeminal ganglion to reduce pain hypersensitivity [PMID:38198371, PMID:37095163].
