Snow Fungus (Tremella fuciformis): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does snow fungus work for skin hydration?

Snow fungus contains tremella polysaccharides that function similarly to hyaluronic acid by binding water molecules and retaining moisture in skin tissues. These glucuronoxylomannans form a hydrating film on the skin surface and stimulate natural hyaluronic acid production. Research (Evidence Level C) suggests these polysaccharides can hold up to 500 times their weight in water, making snow fungus a natural humectant that supports skin barrier function and promotes lasting hydration from within.

Does snow fungus interact with any medications?

Snow fungus has no significant documented drug interactions. Its polysaccharide compounds are generally well-tolerated and do not affect cytochrome P450 enzymes responsible for metabolizing most medications. However, due to its mild blood sugar-lowering effects observed in preliminary research (Evidence Level C), individuals taking diabetes medications should monitor blood glucose levels when consuming snow fungus regularly. Always consult your healthcare provider before adding any herbal supplement to your regimen.

How much snow fungus should I take daily?

The typical adult dosage of snow fungus is 3-15 grams of dried fungus prepared in soups or teas, or approximately 500mg of standardized extract daily (Evidence Level C, Traditional). For skin benefits, consistent daily consumption over 4-8 weeks is traditionally recommended. Start with smaller amounts (3-5g) to assess tolerance, as higher doses may cause mild gastrointestinal upset. Dried snow fungus should be reconstituted and cooked thoroughly before consumption.

Is snow fungus safe during pregnancy?

Snow fungus is considered safe during pregnancy when consumed in normal food amounts (Evidence Level C, Traditional). It has been used safely in Chinese cuisine and traditional medicine for centuries without reported adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. The gentle, nourishing properties make it suitable for supporting maternal hydration and lung health. However, pregnant women should avoid excessive consumption and consult their healthcare provider before using concentrated extracts or supplements.

What are the health benefits of snow fungus?

Snow fungus offers several traditional and emerging health benefits. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it nourishes lung yin, moisturizes dry tissues, and supports spleen function. Modern research (Evidence Level C) suggests benefits for skin hydration and anti-aging due to its hyaluronic acid-like polysaccharides. Additional potential benefits include immune support from beta-glucans, cholesterol management, and blood sugar regulation. The fungus is prized as both a medicinal food and beauty ingredient in Asian cultures.

Résumé

Tremella fuciformis, also known as snow fungus or snow mushroom, is an edible and medicinal fungus widely used in Asian cuisine and traditional medicine [PMID:36757441, PMID:41346688]. Its primary bioactive components are polysaccharides, which exhibit a broad range of health-promoting activities [PMID:30342120, PMID:40814762].

Contexte

Tremella fuciformis is a gelatinous edible mushroom popular in herbal and Asian medicine [PMID:36757441]. It is characterized by a dikaryotic genome and is cultivated for both food and pharmaceutical applications [PMID:38053144, PMID:41346688].

Usages traditionnels

It has been historically popular in herbal and Asian medicine and cuisine, and has been used as a Chinese herb for many years [PMID:36757441, PMID:31030755].

Composés actifs

The main bioactive constituents are Tremella fuciformis polysaccharides (TFPs/TPS/TFPS), which are acidic heteropolysaccharides [PMID:31030755, PMID:41346688, PMID:40263235]. These polysaccharides consist of a linear (1→3)-linked α-d-mannose backbone with branched β-d-xylose, α-d-fucose, and β-d-glucuronic acid side chains [PMID:31030755].

Mécanisme d'action

TFPs exert effects through multiple pathways, including the inhibition of the KDR-mediated P38 MAPK/NF-κB pathway to alleviate early brain injury [PMID:40263235] and the regulation of thioredoxin interacting protein (TXNIP) and thioredoxin reductase 2 (TXNRD2) for photoprotection [PMID:37458972]. They also promote M1 polarization of macrophages to induce apoptosis in melanoma cells [PMID:37241759] and modulate gut microbiota to reduce the Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio in obesity models [PMID:36545204].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve BPrediabetes (Overweight/Obese)

A once-daily beverage containing T. fuciformis improved glycated hemoglobin A1c and waist circumference over 12 weeks [PMID:38439104]

Preuve DAtherosclerosis

In ApoE-/- mice, T. fuciformis decreased aortic root wall thickness and lipid droplet area while regulating lipid levels [PMID:39796594]

Preuve DObesity

TFP inhibited high-fat diet-induced weight gain, fat accumulation, and blood glucose in mice via gut microbiota modulation [PMID:36545204]

Preuve DAtopic Dermatitis

Oral administration of TFPS showed significantly better efficacy than topical application in improving transdermal water loss and epidermal thickening in mice [PMID:36091780]

Preuve DGastric Cancer (EBV-associated)

TFPs induced ferroptosis and decreased cell viability by inactivating NRF2/HO-1 signaling in vitro [PMID:38244583]

Preuve DNon-alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD)

Sécurité et effets indésirables

While TFPs are generally considered health-promoting, spoiled Tremella fuciformis may contain Bongkrekic acid, a toxin that can cause food poisoning by inactivating thiol-group enzymes and inhibiting ATP synthesis, leading to organ damage [PMID:40813078].

Synthèse des preuves

The majority of evidence is based on in vitro studies and animal models (Level D) or literature reviews (Level C). There is limited clinical evidence, including one double-blind RCT (Level B) regarding prediabetes.
