Stylosanthes guianensis (Stylosanthes guianensis): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Stylosanthes guianensis work for wound healing?

Stylosanthes guianensis promotes wound healing primarily through its flavonoid and phenolic compounds, which exhibit antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. These compounds help reduce oxidative stress at the wound site and may inhibit bacterial growth, supporting tissue repair. The tannins present provide astringent effects that help contract wound edges and reduce exudate. This mechanism aligns with its traditional use in South American folk medicine for treating cuts and skin lesions. Evidence Level: C (preliminary studies).

Does Stylosanthes guianensis interact with any medications?

There are currently no documented drug interactions for Stylosanthes guianensis in the scientific literature. However, research on this herb remains limited, so caution is advised. The tannin content could theoretically interfere with absorption of certain oral medications if taken internally, though traditional use is primarily topical. Patients using prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before using this herb. Evidence Level: C (insufficient data).

What is the correct dosage of Stylosanthes guianensis for wound treatment?

The traditional preparation involves crushing fresh leaves into a paste and applying it directly to cleaned wounds. This topical application is typically performed once or twice daily until the wound shows improvement. There are no standardized dosing guidelines from clinical trials. Internal use is not well-documented in traditional practice, and topical application remains the primary recommended method. Evidence Level: Traditional use.

Is Stylosanthes guianensis safe to use during pregnancy?

Stylosanthes guianensis is considered unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding due to insufficient safety data. No clinical studies have evaluated its effects on fetal development or nursing infants. Pregnant women, those planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding mothers should avoid using this herb in any form. Consult a qualified healthcare provider for safe alternatives for wound care during pregnancy. Evidence Level: C (insufficient safety data).

What are the traditional medicinal uses of Stylosanthes guianensis?

Stylosanthes guianensis is primarily used in South American folk medicine for wound healing. Traditional applications include applying crushed leaf paste to cuts, abrasions, and skin lesions to promote healing and prevent infection. Preliminary research suggests antimicrobial and antioxidant properties that may support these traditional uses. The plant is also widely cultivated as fodder for livestock and for soil improvement in tropical agriculture. Evidence Level: C (preliminary evidence and traditional use).

Résumé

Stylosanthes guianensis, commonly known as stylo, is an economically important tropical and subtropical forage legume used for cattle feeding and soil nitrogen fixation [PMID:33309914, PMID:41045087].

Contexte

It is a leguminous shrub cultivated extensively in tropical areas, noted for its high nutritional value and ability to adapt to infertile, acidic soils [PMID:33309914, PMID:30237807].

Composés actifs

The plant contains flavonoids, phenolic acids [PMID:39761536], and polyphenols such as tannic acid [PMID:33224123]. Root exudates under phosphorus deficiency include tartaric acid, L-cysteine, and various isoflavonoids and flavanones [PMID:37100319].

Synthèse des preuves

The provided evidence is entirely focused on agricultural, genomic, and veterinary nutritional research; there are no human clinical trials or pharmacological studies.
