Question 1

How does sweetgrass work medicinally in the body?

Accepted Answer

Sweetgrass contains active compounds including coumarin, flavonoids, and essential oils that contribute to its medicinal effects. Coumarin provides anti-inflammatory activity and gives sweetgrass its characteristic vanilla-like fragrance. The flavonoids offer antioxidant properties, while the essential oils demonstrate antimicrobial effects, particularly when released through smoke. These compounds work synergistically to support respiratory function and reduce inflammation. Evidence level: C (preliminary scientific evidence based on constituent analysis).

Question 2

Does sweetgrass interact with blood thinners or anticoagulant medications?

Accepted Answer

Sweetgrass contains natural coumarin compounds, which may theoretically interact with anticoagulant medications such as warfarin. While no clinical interaction studies exist, individuals taking blood thinners should exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider before using sweetgrass medicinally. Those with known coumarin sensitivity should avoid sweetgrass entirely. No other significant drug interactions have been documented in current literature. Evidence level: C (theoretical based on constituent profile).

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage of sweetgrass tea for adults?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for sweetgrass tea is 3-6 grams of dried herb daily. To prepare, steep the dried sweetgrass in hot water for 10-15 minutes, then strain before drinking. This preparation has been used traditionally to support respiratory health and manage fever symptoms. Start with the lower dosage range to assess individual tolerance. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing guidance. Evidence level: C (traditional use with limited clinical data).

Question 4

Is sweetgrass safe to use during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Sweetgrass is generally considered safe during pregnancy when consumed in traditional amounts as a tea. No adverse effects have been documented in traditional use, though clinical safety studies in pregnant populations are lacking. As with any herbal preparation during pregnancy, consult a qualified healthcare provider before use. Limited information exists regarding breastfeeding safety, so caution is recommended. Those with coumarin sensitivity should avoid sweetgrass. Evidence level: C (traditional use, no clinical trials).

Question 5

What is sweetgrass used for in Native American traditional medicine?

Accepted Answer

Sweetgrass is a sacred ceremonial herb used by many Native American nations for both spiritual and medicinal purposes. Medicinally, it has been traditionally used to support respiratory health, reduce fever, and address coughs and congestion. The herb is often burned as smudge, releasing antimicrobial smoke. Sweetgrass is considered one of the four sacred medicines alongside tobacco, cedar, and sage. Evidence level: C (traditional use with preliminary scientific support).
