Ligusticum striatum
Important TCM herb used to invigorate blood, move Qi, and relieve pain. Used for headaches, menstrual disorders, and cardiovascular conditions.
Szechuan Lovage (Ligusticum striatum, syn. Ligusticum chuanxiong) is a traditional Chinese herb used to invigorate blood, move Qi, and relieve pain. Its primary active compounds—tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), ligustilide, senkyunolide, and ferulic acid—confer vasodilatory, antiplatelet, and anti-inflammatory effects. It is commonly employed for headaches, menstrual disorders, and cardiovascular support, though clinical evidence remains limited (evidence grade C).
Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) inhibits platelet aggregation by elevating intracellular cAMP and blocking thromboxane A2 receptors. Ligustilide relaxes vascular smooth muscle via L-type calcium channel blockade and activation of the nitric oxide/cGMP pathway. Ferulic acid scavenges free radicals and downregulates COX-2 expression, reducing inflammation. These actions synergistically improve microcirculation, alleviate pain, and modulate vascular tone.
