Livèche du Sichuan (Ligusticum striatum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Szechuan Lovage work to improve blood circulation?

Szechuan Lovage contains active compounds including tetramethylpyrazine, ligustilide, and ferulic acid that act as vasodilators, relaxing blood vessels and improving blood flow. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is said to invigorate blood and move Qi. These compounds may also have cardioprotective and anti-inflammatory effects. Research on cardiovascular benefits shows promise but remains limited (Evidence Level C).

Can I take Szechuan Lovage with blood thinners or anticoagulants?

No, Szechuan Lovage should not be combined with blood-thinning medications. The herb has significant blood-moving properties that may increase bleeding risk when taken with anticoagulants like warfarin, aspirin, clopidogrel, or other antiplatelet drugs. This interaction occurs because its active compounds affect blood flow and circulation. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining with any anticoagulant medication.

What is the recommended dosage for Szechuan Lovage?

The typical adult dosage for Szechuan Lovage is 3-10 grams of dried root prepared as a decoction daily. For standardized extracts, 300-600mg daily is commonly recommended. Dosage may vary based on the specific condition being treated and individual factors. Always follow product label instructions or consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing guidance.

Is Szechuan Lovage safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Szechuan Lovage is contraindicated during pregnancy. The herb has strong blood-moving properties that may stimulate uterine contractions and increase the risk of miscarriage or premature labor. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is specifically avoided during pregnancy due to these effects. Women who are pregnant, trying to conceive, or breastfeeding should avoid this herb entirely.

What is Szechuan Lovage used for in traditional medicine?

Szechuan Lovage is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to invigorate blood circulation, relieve headaches, and treat menstrual pain and disorders. It addresses blood stasis patterns that manifest as headaches, menstrual irregularities, and cardiovascular conditions. Modern applications include supporting cardiovascular health through its vasodilatory effects. Clinical evidence for these uses is limited but promising (Evidence Level C).

What are the side effects of taking Szechuan Lovage?

Common side effects of Szechuan Lovage include headache at high doses, gastrointestinal upset, and dizziness. These effects are generally mild when taken at recommended dosages. People with excessive menstrual bleeding should avoid this herb due to its blood-moving properties. Discontinue use if significant side effects occur and consult a healthcare provider.

Résumé

Szechuan Lovage (Ligusticum striatum DC), also known as Chuan Xiong, is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used primarily for promoting blood circulation and treating cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases [PMID:33034219, PMID:41015772].

Contexte

Ligusticum striatum DC is a geoauthentic traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) herb distributed in the Sichuan province of China, where its dried rhizome serves as the medicinal part [PMID:33034219, PMID:34467744].

Usages traditionnels

It is traditionally used to promote blood circulation, remove blood stasis, alleviate pain [PMID:33034219], and is frequently used in prescriptions for treating headaches and migraines [PMID:33308095, PMID:26275651]. It is also used in Taiwanese culture to facilitate postpartum lochia discharge [PMID:37146845].

Composés actifs

Key active compounds include tetramethylpyrazine (TMP), also known as ligustrazine [PMID:36133805, PMID:35468584], and various butylphthalides such as ligusticumolide H, senkyunolide I, senkyunolide H, senkyunolide C, and (3R,3'S)-3'-hydroxy-3-butylphthalide [PMID:37042678]. Other constituents include alkaloids, polysaccharides, organic acids, and volatile oils containing ligustilide and butyldienephthalide [PMID:33034219, PMID:22955453, PMID:16539851].

Mécanisme d'action

Tetramethylpyrazine (TMP) acts by inhibiting calcium ion overload, glutamate excitotoxicity, oxidative/nitrification stress, and inflammatory responses, while protecting the blood-brain barrier [PMID:36133805]. In keratinocytes, TMP inhibits the TRAF6/c-JUN/NF-κB signaling pathway [PMID:35468584]. Other mechanisms include the regulation of autophagy [PMID:26999089] and the release of nitric oxide to mediate vasorelaxation [PMID:14971721].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve AHeadache

Chuanxiong Chadiao Powder (CXCP) is used for treating headache, with systematic reviews assessing its clinical efficacy [PMID:26275651].

Preuve DCardiac Hypertrophy

Guanxinning tablets (containing L. striatum) alleviate cardiac hypertrophy and regulate MAP3K1 signaling in zebrafish and mouse models [PMID:41015772].

Preuve DIschemic Stroke

L. striatum combined with borneol promotes astrocyte-mediated neurogenesis against cerebral ischemia [PMID:38492790].

Preuve DMigraine

Preuve DDiabetic Microalbuminuria

A decoction of Radix Astragali and Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong was used to evaluate effects on urinary albumin excretion and vascular endothelial dysfunction in type 2 diabetic patients [PMID:16078580].

Grossesse et allaitement

Used in Taiwanese culture for postpartum lochia discharge [PMID:37146845].

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence ranges from high-level systematic reviews for headache treatment to preclinical animal and in vitro studies for cardiovascular, renal, and neurological applications.
