Tilia cordata
European linden with small fragrant flowers considered most medicinal; used for anxiety, cardiovascular, and colds across Europe.
Tilia cordata (small-leaved linden) is a European herb traditionally used for anxiety, insomnia, and as a diaphoretic for colds. Modern research suggests anxiolytic, antispasmodic, and cardiovascular protective effects. Key active compounds include the volatile oil farnesol, flavonoids kaempferol and quercetin, and mucilage.
The anxiolytic and sedative effects are attributed to flavonoid compounds (e.g., quercetin, kaempferol) that modulate GABA-A receptors, similar to benzodiazepines. Antispasmodic activity involves inhibition of calcium influx in smooth muscle cells. Cardiovascular protection may result from antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions, as well as mild diuretic and vasodilatory effects. The diaphoretic action is thought to be mediated by cholinergic stimulation of sweat glands.
