Torilis japonica (Torilis japonica): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Torilis japonica work as an anti-inflammatory?

Torilis japonica contains bioactive compounds including terpenes, flavonoids, and tannins that are believed to modulate inflammatory pathways. These compounds may inhibit pro-inflammatory mediators and cytokines, though the exact mechanisms have not been fully elucidated in human studies. Laboratory research suggests potential antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, but clinical evidence remains limited (Evidence Level C). More research is needed to confirm specific mechanisms of action in humans.

Does Torilis japonica interact with any medications?

There are no well-documented drug interactions for Torilis japonica in the scientific literature. However, due to limited clinical research, caution is advised when combining it with anti-inflammatory medications, blood thinners, or other herbal supplements. As an Apiaceae family member, it may share properties with related plants. Patients taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Always disclose all supplements to your healthcare provider.

What is the recommended dosage for Torilis japonica?

The traditional adult dosage for Torilis japonica is 1-2 grams of dried herb prepared as a tea, taken up to three times daily. This dosing is based on folk medicine traditions rather than clinical trials (Evidence Level C). There is no standardized extract dosage established. Users should start with lower doses to assess tolerance. Always follow product-specific recommendations if available, and consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

Is Torilis japonica safe to use during pregnancy?

Torilis japonica is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. As a member of the Apiaceae family, it may contain compounds that could stimulate uterine contractions or affect fetal development. There is insufficient safety data for use during breastfeeding. Women who are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding should not use this herb. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herbal supplement during pregnancy.

What is Torilis japonica used for in traditional medicine?

Torilis japonica has been used in East Asian folk medicine primarily as an anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial agent. Traditional applications include treating digestive complaints, skin infections, and inflammatory conditions. The herb has also been employed as a digestive tonic to support gastrointestinal health. These uses are based on ethnobotanical tradition (Evidence Level C) rather than rigorous clinical trials. Modern research is investigating these traditional applications, but evidence remains preliminary.

What are the side effects of Torilis japonica?

Torilis japonica may cause mild adverse reactions in some individuals, including gastrointestinal upset or allergic skin responses. People with known allergies to Apiaceae family plants (such as carrots, celery, fennel, or parsley) should avoid this herb due to potential cross-reactivity. Serious side effects have not been documented, but comprehensive safety studies are lacking. Discontinue use if any adverse reactions occur and seek medical attention if symptoms persist or worsen.

Résumé

Torilis japonica is a medicinal herb from the Apiaceae family known for its diverse sesquiterpene content and various biological activities, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial effects [PMID:37073927].

Contexte

Torilis japonica (also known as Torilidis fructus) is a wild biennial herb distributed in East Asia [PMID:28823078, PMID:21472352]. It belongs to the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family [PMID:37073927, PMID:11937159].

Usages traditionnels

Folk medicinal applications of the fruits include the treatment of dysentery, fever, haemorrhoids, spasm, uterine tumors, lymphadenitis, rheumatism, impotence, infertility, women's diseases, and chronic diarrhea [PMID:37073927]. It has also been used traditionally for skin diseases, inflammation, and erectile dysfunction [PMID:28823078, PMID:21472352, PMID:39125672].

Composés actifs

The plant is characterized by diverse terpene derivatives, predominantly sesquiterpenes [PMID:37073927]. A major bioactive constituent is torilin, a guaiane-type sesquiterpene [PMID:37073927, PMID:18298734]. Other identified compounds include deangeloyloxy torilin [PMID:11794530], 1beta-hydroxytorilin, 1alpha-hydroxytorilin [PMID:16526276], eudesmane-type sesquiterpenoids (4(15)-eudesmene-1beta,5alpha-diol and 4alpha,15-epoxyeudesmane-1beta,6alpha-diol) [PMID:11937159], and torijapolides A–E [PMID:42008758].

Mécanisme d'action

Torilin inhibits inflammation by limiting TAK1-mediated MAP kinase and NF-κB activation [PMID:28316375] and blocks the hKv1.5 potassium channel current [PMID:17121176]. In cancer cells, extracts may induce apoptosis via the AMPK-p38 MAPK signaling pathway and generation of intracellular ROS [PMID:27314881], or suppress epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) through EGFR inactivation [PMID:25051266]. Torilin also downregulates tyrosinase protein levels to inhibit melanin production [PMID:19533579] and inhibits 5 alpha-reductase activity [PMID:12802730].
