Zephyranthes grandiflora (Zephyranthes grandiflora): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Zephyranthes grandiflora work for diabetes?

Zephyranthes grandiflora contains bioactive alkaloids, specifically lycorine and tazettine, along with flavonoids. These compounds are believed to influence glucose metabolism, though the exact mechanism remains under investigation. Research suggests these constituents may contribute to hypoglycemic activity, supporting its traditional use for blood sugar control (Evidence Level: C).

Can I take Zephyranthes grandiflora with metformin or other diabetes medications?

You should avoid taking Zephyranthes grandiflora alongside prescription diabetes medications like metformin without medical supervision. Because the herb possesses blood sugar-lowering properties, combining it with pharmaceutical drugs may cause hypoglycemia (dangerously low blood sugar). Consult a healthcare provider before adding this herb to any regimen involving antidiabetic drugs.

What is the recommended dosage for Zephyranthes grandiflora tea?

Traditional preparation involves steeping 3 to 5 grams of dried leaves in a cup of hot water. This tea is typically consumed twice daily. It is crucial to avoid ingesting the bulb, as it is toxic. Always adhere to recommended quantities to minimize the risk of adverse side effects like nausea.

Is Zephyranthes grandiflora safe during pregnancy?

No, Zephyranthes grandiflora is considered unsafe during pregnancy. The plant contains potent alkaloids, such as lycorine, which can stimulate uterine contractions and pose a risk of miscarriage. Additionally, the bulb is toxic and should never be ingested. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should strictly avoid this herb.

What are the side effects of Zephyranthes grandiflora?

Common side effects include nausea and gastrointestinal distress, particularly if the toxic bulb is accidentally ingested. The presence of alkaloids like lycorine can cause more severe reactions in sensitive individuals. Due to the potential for toxicity, proper identification and preparation using only the leaves are essential for safety.

Résumé

Zephyranthes grandiflora is a plant species containing various Amaryllidaceae alkaloids and lectins that demonstrate in vitro cytotoxic and anti-inflammatory properties [PMID:30179638, PMID:33502261, PMID:23513717].

Contexte

Zephyranthes grandiflora is a member of the Amaryllidaceae family with high ornamental value and contains bioactive compounds [PMID:33442831].

Composés actifs

The plant contains Amaryllidaceae alkaloids including galanthamine [PMID:39065458], lycoramine, hamayne, haemanthamine, tortuosine [PMID:22939505], lycorine, galanthine, and ungeremine [PMID:23513717], as well as a new betaine-type alkaloid called zephgrabetaine [PMID:23513717]. It also contains 4a-epi-plicamine-type alkaloids (zephygranditines A-F and zephyranthines A-C) [PMID:30179638, PMID:33502261] and a mannose-binding agglutinin (ZGA) [PMID:19067248, PMID:15553865].

Mécanisme d'action

Certain alkaloids from the plant inhibit the production of nitric oxide (NO) and inhibit Cox-1/Cox-2 [PMID:30179638].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DMalignant melanoma

Zephygranditines 1-3 exhibited cytotoxic activity in vitro with IC50 values <20 μM [PMID:30179638]

Preuve DGlioma

Zephyranthines 2 and 3 exhibited significant in vitro cytotoxic activities against six glioma cell lines with IC50 values <20 μM [PMID:33502261]; additionally, lycorine and haemanthamine showed prominent cytotoxic activity against rat glioma cells (C-6) [PMID:23513717]

Preuve DInflammation

Zephygranditines 1 and 2 displayed anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting nitric oxide production and Cox-1/Cox-2 in vitro [PMID:30179638]
