Summary
Zinnia elegans is an ornamental plant of the Asteraceae family used extensively as a model system for studying xylem differentiation and programmed cell death [PMID:23956408, PMID:31412649].
Background
Zinnia elegans (syn. Zinnia violacea) is a common ornamental plant known for its diverse flower colors and adaptability to harsh landscape conditions [PMID:31412649]. It is frequently utilized in plant tissue culture research, specifically for establishing xylogenic cultures of mesophyll cells to study cell wall biosynthesis and lignin formation [PMID:32617931, PMID:21222073].
Active compounds
Methanolic extracts of Z. elegans inflorescences contain polyphenolic compounds [PMID:31412649]. Metabolomic profiling has identified coumarins, sesquiterpene lactones, and phenylethanoids as characteristic compounds [PMID:30580583]. Additionally, a macrocyclic peptide known as PDP-23 has been identified in its seeds [PMID:34040741].
Mechanism of action
In the context of plant biology, Z. elegans utilizes transcription factors such as ZeMYB9 to positively regulate anthocyanin accumulation by activating the flavonoid 3'-hydroxylase gene [PMID:36330274], while ZeMYB32 acts as a negative regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis [PMID:38632151]. Xylogenesis in this species involves a coordinated sequence of events leading to vacuolar programmed cell death (PCD) and cell wall lignification involving peroxidases [PMID:28194564, PMID:23956408].
Clinical evidence
Evidence DPlasmodium falciparum (Malaria)
The ethyl acetate fraction of Z. elegans demonstrated significant antimalarial activity with IC50 values of 21.03 and 13.72 μg/mL against P. falciparum D6 and W2 strains, respectively [PMID:30580583].
Evidence summary
The available evidence is primarily based on botanical, phytochemical, and in vitro laboratory studies. There are no human clinical trials; the only biological activity reported is antimalarial activity in an in vitro setting.
