Question 1

How does Ajuga reptans work as an anti-inflammatory herb?

Accepted Answer

Ajuga reptans contains bioactive iridoid compounds, particularly harpagide and acetylharpagide, which are responsible for its anti-inflammatory effects. These compounds work by inhibiting inflammatory pathways and reducing pro-inflammatory mediators in the body. The herb also contains ajugose, a polysaccharide that may support wound healing through tissue-regenerating properties. These constituents collectively contribute to the herb's traditional use for bruises, wounds, and inflammatory conditions. Evidence level: C (preliminary evidence from in vitro and animal studies).

Question 2

Does Ajuga reptans interact with blood thinners or other medications?

Accepted Answer

There is limited clinical data on drug interactions for Ajuga reptans. Due to its traditional use as a wound-healing herb with potential effects on blood clotting, theoretical interactions with anticoagulant and antiplatelet medications such as warfarin, aspirin, or clopidogrel may exist. Patients taking blood-thinning medications should exercise caution and consult a healthcare provider before using Ajuga reptans internally. Evidence level: C (theoretical based on traditional use and constituent properties).

Question 3

What is the correct dosage of Ajuga reptans for medicinal use?

Accepted Answer

The standard adult dosage for Ajuga reptans is 3-6 grams of dried herb daily, prepared as a tea or used as a topical wash for wound healing. For sore throat, the herb is traditionally prepared as a gargle. This dosage recommendation is based on traditional European folk medicine use rather than clinical trials. Always follow product-specific instructions on commercial preparations and consult a qualified herbalist or healthcare provider for personalized dosing guidance. Evidence level: C.

Question 4

Is Ajuga reptans safe to take during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

Ajuga reptans is considered unsafe during pregnancy and is contraindicated. The herb contains iridoid glycosides, including harpagide, which may stimulate uterine contractions or potentially affect fetal development. There is insufficient safety data for use during breastfeeding, so avoidance is recommended while nursing. Women who are pregnant, planning pregnancy, or breastfeeding should consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herbal supplements and avoid Ajuga reptans entirely.

Question 5

What are the traditional medicinal uses of Ajuga reptans?

Accepted Answer

Ajuga reptans, commonly known as bugle or bugleweed, has been used in European folk medicine for centuries. Primary traditional uses include wound healing when applied topically as a wash or poultice, treatment of sore throat when used as a gargle, and reducing inflammation for bruises and minor injuries. The herb's wound-healing and anti-inflammatory properties are attributed to its iridoid compounds. Evidence level: C (based primarily on traditional use and preliminary pharmacological research).

Question 6

What side effects can Ajuga reptans cause?

Accepted Answer

Ajuga reptans is generally well-tolerated when used at recommended doses. Reported side effects are rare but may include mild gastrointestinal upset such as nausea or stomach discomfort. Allergic skin reactions are possible with topical application in sensitive individuals. Due to limited comprehensive safety data, prolonged internal use is not recommended without professional guidance. Discontinue use immediately if any adverse reactions occur and consult a healthcare provider. Evidence level: C.
