Vernonia colorata is a bitter herb from the Asteraceae family, traditionally used in Burundian folk medicine for malaria, liver ailments, and intestinal parasites. Modern research indicates antimalarial, hepatoprotective, and antiparasitic activities, attributed to sesquiterpene lactones such as vernolide, along with flavonoids and alkaloids.
The antimalarial activity is primarily due to vernolide and other sesquiterpene lactones, which inhibit Plasmodium falciparum growth by interfering with protein synthesis and inducing oxidative stress. Hepatoprotective effects may involve modulation of cytochrome P450 enzymes and reduction of oxidative damage via flavonoid antioxidants. The antiparasitic action likely results from disruption of parasite membrane integrity and inhibition of key metabolic enzymes.
