Carissa edulis (Carissa African) is an East African shrub whose root and fruit are traditionally used for infections, chest pain, and as a cardiotonic. Its active compounds include carissone, lignans, tannins, flavonoids, and cardiac glycosides, which contribute to antimicrobial, analgesic, and cardiovascular effects. Evidence is limited (Grade C) and primarily based on traditional use and preliminary studies.
The cardiac glycosides in Carissa edulis inhibit Na+/K+-ATPase, increasing intracellular calcium and enhancing myocardial contractility, which underlies its cardiotonic effect. Flavonoids and tannins provide antimicrobial activity by disrupting bacterial cell walls and inhibiting efflux pumps. Carissone and lignans exhibit analgesic and anti-inflammatory actions via COX-2 inhibition and modulation of TRPV1 receptors. The combination of compounds may also contribute to antimalarial effects through inhibition of heme polymerization.
