Coffea canephora (Coffea canephora): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does green coffee bean extract work for weight loss?

Green coffee bean extract from Coffea canephora contains chlorogenic acid, which may inhibit glucose absorption in the digestive tract and reduce glucose-6-phosphatase activity in the liver, potentially decreasing hepatic glucose output. The high caffeine content stimulates lipolysis and increases metabolic rate through adenosine receptor antagonism. Evidence Level C suggests preliminary support, but more rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm these mechanisms contribute significantly to weight management outcomes.

What medications interact with green coffee extract?

Coffea canephora's high caffeine content interacts with several medication classes. It may increase effects of stimulants and worsen side effects of MAO inhibitors. Caffeine can reduce efficacy of sedatives and antianxiety medications. It may increase blood levels of theophylline and enhance effects of anticoagulants like warfarin. Caffeine also reduces absorption of iron supplements and can increase elimination of lithium. Consult a healthcare provider before combining with prescription medications.

What is the recommended dosage for green robusta coffee extract?

Clinical studies on Coffea canephora green bean extract typically use doses of 400mg taken twice daily, standardized to contain 45-50% chlorogenic acids. This provides approximately 100-200mg of caffeine per dose. Traditional use as brewed coffee varies widely. Start with lower doses to assess tolerance, and avoid consumption after mid-afternoon to prevent sleep disruption. Evidence Level C supports this dosing range based on preliminary research.

Is green coffee extract safe during pregnancy?

Coffea canephora supplements are considered unsafe during pregnancy due to their high caffeine content. Green robusta beans contain significantly more caffeine than arabica varieties. Excessive caffeine intake during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of miscarriage, low birth weight, and developmental concerns. Healthcare providers typically recommend limiting total caffeine intake to under 200mg daily during pregnancy. Pregnant individuals should avoid concentrated green coffee extracts entirely.

What are the side effects of Coffea canephora extract?

Common side effects include insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, increased heart rate (tachycardia), and digestive upset. Due to higher caffeine content than arabica coffee, robusta extracts may cause more pronounced stimulant effects. Regular use can lead to caffeine dependency, with withdrawal symptoms including headache, fatigue, and irritability upon discontinuation. Individuals with anxiety disorders, hypertension, or cardiac conditions should avoid use. Evidence Level C indicates these effects are consistent with caffeine pharmacology.

Résumé

Coffea canephora, commonly known as Robusta coffee, is an economically significant understorey tree native to tropical Africa and widely cultivated globally [PMID: 35527235, PMID: 41626337].

Contexte

Coffea canephora (Robusta) is a self-incompatible plant species primarily distributed in the lowland rainforests of tropical Africa [PMID: 35527235, PMID: 36432754]. It is one of the two most commercially important coffee species worldwide, with major production hubs in Vietnam, Brazil, Uganda, Indonesia, India, and other Latin American and African countries [PMID: 35434233, PMID: 41626337].

Usages traditionnels

Used primarily as a beverage [PMID: 33828371, PMID: 40620489].

Composés actifs

The plant contains caffeine, total polyphenols, flavonoids, and soluble sugars [PMID: 42188012]. Specific compounds include dimeric B-type procyanidins (B1 and B3) found in coffee cherry pulp [PMID: 42302880] and chlorogenic acid (CGA) [PMID: 39186595].

Mécanisme d'action

In vitro studies suggest that Robusta coffee bean extracts can reduce the viability of human breast, colorectal, brain, and bone cancer cells [PMID: 34113419].

Preuve BCognitive function

Daily intake of coffee cherry pulp extract from Coffea canephora var. Robusta was studied for cognitive improvement in healthy adults with suspected mild cognitive impairment [PMID: 42302880].

Preuve DCancer (In vitro)

Green and dark coffee extracts significantly reduced viability in human breast, colorectal, brain, and bone cancer cell lines [PMID: 34113419].

Preuve DDiabetes (Animal model)

Ethanolic extract of robusta green coffee beans at 100 mg/kg body weight in rats yielded the highest percentage of glucose reduction [PMID: 33828371].

Preuve DAtherosclerosis (Animal model)

Robusta coffee bean extracts were administered to atherosclerosis rat models to measure P-selectin expression and serum apolipoprotein A-1 levels [PMID: 39280317].

Preuve DMicrobial growth (In vitro)

Green Robusta extracts exhibited antimicrobial effectiveness when used as intracanal irrigants in human teeth [PMID: 39959014].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

Caffeine content in Robusta coffee cascara (1-1.3 g) may cause side effects such as insomnia and seizures [PMID: 38334152].

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence is primarily based on in vitro studies, animal models, and early-stage clinical trials (RCT), with significant focus on agricultural genomics and biochemical profiling.
