Cotoneaster integerrimus is a European shrub whose berries are traditionally used as an astringent for digestive complaints. It contains tannins, flavonoids, and cyanogenic glycosides. Modern research suggests antioxidant and astringent properties, but clinical evidence is limited (Level C).
The astringent effect is primarily due to tannins, which precipitate proteins in the gastrointestinal mucosa, reducing inflammation and diarrhea. Flavonoids contribute antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals and chelating metal ions. Cyanogenic glycosides can release small amounts of hydrogen cyanide upon hydrolysis, but cooking reduces this risk. Additionally, tannins may inhibit bacterial growth and modulate gut motility.
