Drosera anglica, a larger species of sundew native to Europe and North America, is used primarily as an antitussive and antispasmodic for respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, and whooping cough. Its key active compounds include the naphthoquinone plumbagin, ramentaceone, flavonoids, and tannins, which contribute to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects.
The antitussive and antispasmodic actions of Drosera anglica are attributed to plumbagin and other naphthoquinones, which inhibit smooth muscle contraction in the respiratory tract via modulation of calcium channels and possibly through antagonism of histamine H1 receptors.
