Hydrocotyle vulgaris (Hydrocotyle vulgaris): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Hydrocotyle vulgaris work medicinally?

Hydrocotyle vulgaris contains active compounds including trace asiaticoside, flavonoids, and tannins that contribute to its medicinal effects. The tannins provide astringent properties useful for skin conditions, while flavonoids offer antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits. Asiaticoside, though present in smaller amounts than in related gotu kola (Centella asiatica), may support wound healing through tissue regeneration. Evidence level: C (limited scientific evidence, primarily traditional use).

Does Hydrocotyle vulgaris interact with any medications?

Hydrocotyle vulgaris has documented diuretic properties and may potentially interact with prescription diuretic medications, affecting fluid and electrolyte balance. Due to limited research (Evidence level C), specific drug interactions are not well documented. Patients taking diuretics, blood pressure medications, or lithium should consult a healthcare provider before use, as combining herbal diuretics with prescription medications may increase effects or cause electrolyte imbalances.

What is the recommended dosage for Hydrocotyle vulgaris?

The traditional adult dosage for Hydrocotyle vulgaris is 2-3 grams of dried herb prepared as a tea infusion, taken once to twice daily. This dosage is based on traditional use rather than clinical trials (Evidence level C). Appropriate dosage may vary based on individual factors, preparation method, and intended use. Consult a qualified medical herbalist or healthcare provider for personalized dosing recommendations.

Is Hydrocotyle vulgaris safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Hydrocotyle vulgaris is considered unsafe during pregnancy and should be avoided. The herb's diuretic properties and potential effects on uterine tissue pose risks during pregnancy. Safety during breastfeeding has not been established, so nursing mothers should also avoid this herb. Pregnant women experiencing skin conditions or digestive complaints should consult their healthcare provider for pregnancy-safe alternatives rather than using this herb.

What is Hydrocotyle vulgaris used for in herbal medicine?

Hydrocotyle vulgaris has been used traditionally for skin conditions including wounds and minor skin irritations, digestive complaints, and as a mild diuretic herb. It may be applied topically for wound care or taken internally as a tea for digestive support. Evidence level C indicates limited scientific validation; uses are primarily based on European folk medicine tradition rather than clinical trials. Always consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis.

Résumé

Hydrocotyle vulgaris, also known as Marsh Pennywort, is a perennial wetland clonal plant in the Araliaceae family [PMID:38770144]. It is recognized for its ability to remediate water pollution by removing heavy metals and organic pollutants [PMID:38770144, PMID:29873532].

Contexte

Hydrocotyle vulgaris (Marsh Pennywort) is a perennial wetland clonal plant belonging to the Araliaceae family [PMID:38770144]. It has been introduced to China as an ornamental plant and is considered a potentially invasive species in that region [PMID:38770144].

Mécanisme d'action

The plant utilizes antioxidant defense systems, including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, and catalase, to respond to pollutants [PMID:24552049]. Additionally, alpha-linolenic acid/jasmonic acid (JA) signaling has been identified as a candidate regulator for mitigating oxidative stress [PMID:42296827].

Synthèse des preuves

The available evidence is entirely based on botanical, genomic, and environmental studies (phytoremediation and ecology). There are no clinical trials or human medicinal studies provided for Hydrocotyle vulgaris.
