Ji Nei Jin (Gallus gallus domesticus (gizzard lining)): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Ji Nei Jin work to treat food stagnation?

Ji Nei Jin contains digestive enzymes, pepsin-like compounds, and ventriculin that enhance gastric digestion and promote the breakdown of proteins and other nutrients. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it strengthens the Spleen and Stomach to resolve food stagnation by improving digestive capacity. The enzymatic components help break down accumulated food, while amino acids support tissue repair. These same properties may contribute to its ability to address calculi in the gallbladder and urinary tract. Evidence Level: C (based on traditional use and limited modern research).

Does Ji Nei Jin interact with any medications?

There are no well-documented drug interactions for Ji Nei Jin in the scientific literature. As a digestive enzyme-containing substance, it may theoretically affect the absorption of certain medications by altering gastric pH or digestive transit time. Patients taking acid-suppressing medications (such as proton pump inhibitors or H2 blockers) or drugs requiring specific gastric pH for absorption should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before use. Evidence Level: C (theoretical concerns based on mechanism, not documented interactions).

What is the recommended dosage for Ji Nei Jin?

The typical adult dosage of Ji Nei Jin is 3-10 grams daily, taken as a powder or included in a decoction. For mild food stagnation, 3-6 grams is often sufficient. For stone-related conditions such as gallstones or urinary calculi, practitioners may recommend 6-10 grams. The powder form is considered more effective than decoctions, as high heat may degrade the active enzymes. Doses should be divided throughout the day and taken before or with meals. Evidence Level: C (Traditional use guidelines).

Is Ji Nei Jin safe during pregnancy?

Ji Nei Jin is generally considered safe during pregnancy when used appropriately for indicated conditions. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, it is classified as safe for pregnant women because it addresses food stagnation without harsh purgative effects. However, pregnant women should only use this herb under the guidance of a qualified TCM practitioner who can assess individual circumstances. Side effects are rare but may include mild gastrointestinal upset. As with any supplement during pregnancy, consult your healthcare provider before use. Evidence Level: C (Traditional use).

Can Ji Nei Jin help with gallstones?

Ji Nei Jin is traditionally used to help dissolve and eliminate gallstones in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its enzyme content and stone-resolving properties make it a common ingredient in formulas targeting gallbladder and urinary calculi. The herb works by promoting bile flow and potentially breaking down stone-forming compounds. While traditional use strongly supports this application, modern clinical evidence remains limited. Ji Nei Jin is typically combined with other stone-resolving herbs like Jin Qian Cao and Hai Jin Sha for enhanced effectiveness. Evidence Level: C.

What are the side effects of Ji Nei Jin?

Ji Nei Jin is well-tolerated with few reported side effects. The most common adverse effect is mild gastrointestinal upset, including nausea or stomach discomfort, which occurs rarely. The herb should not be used in cases of Spleen deficiency without food stagnation, as it may further weaken digestive function in these individuals. As an animal-derived product from chicken gizzard lining, individuals with poultry allergies should exercise caution. Overall, Ji Nei Jin has an excellent safety profile. Evidence Level: C (Traditional use and limited clinical data).

Résumé

Ji Nei Jin, also known as Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Corneum (GGEC), is a traditional Chinese medicine derived from the dried inner lining of the chicken gizzard used primarily for digestive and lithiasis treatments [PMID:40771715, PMID:36725264].

Contexte

Ji Nei Jin (Galli Gigeriae Endothelium Corneum) is the dried gizzard membrane of Gallus gallus domesticus [PMID:30194056, PMID:36725264].

Usages traditionnels

It has been used for centuries in China to treat indigestion, enuresis, gallstones, urinary calculi, vomiting, diarrhea, and infantile malnutrition with accumulation [PMID:40771715, PMID:37583472, PMID:36471957].

Composés actifs

Bioactive constituents include proteins, amino acids, peptides, enzymes, trace elements [PMID:40771715], soy isoflavones, and bile acids [PMID:33593395]. Specific components identified include nucleosides [PMID:36725264], polysaccharides composed of rhamnose, fucose, mannose, glucose, and galactose [PMID:24751271], and a specific pentapeptide (LNLYP/LP-5) [PMID:33210912].

Mécanisme d'action

GGEC may enhance intestinal barrier function by increasing tight junction protein levels (ZO-1 and Occludin) and reducing inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and IL-6) [PMID:33593395]. The peptide LP-5 specifically activates the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) to inhibit Src kinase, thereby protecting the intestinal barrier [PMID:33210912]. It also demonstrates the ability to inhibit calcium oxalate crystal formation [PMID:30194056].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve BPancreatic duct stones

Evaluated for efficacy in the dissolution of stones and improvement of clinical symptoms in a prospective cohort study [PMID:36098361].

Preuve BChildren's anorexia (spleen-stomach disharmony)

A multi-center RCT on Child Compound Endothelium Corneum (CCEC) showed no statistical difference in recovery rate of anorexia or weight change compared to the control group after 21 days [PMID:34047133].

Preuve DUrolithiasis

A case report showed complete removal of a ureteral stone after therapy with a combination of herbs including Endothelium Corneum Gigeriae Galli [PMID:29458917].

Preuve DFunctional Dyspepsia (FD)

In rat models, Child compound Endothelium corneum (CCEC) significantly enhanced gastric emptying and small intestinal transit and suppressed gastrointestinal microinflammation [PMID:31082513].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

Traditional Chinese Medicine is generally preferred for its safety and minimal/reduced side effects [PMID:30194056].

Synthèse des preuves

The evidence consists primarily of preclinical animal models (rats/mice) and in vitro studies focusing on gastrointestinal protection and stone dissolution, with limited clinical data from a case report and small-scale trials showing mixed results for pediatric anorexia.
