Question 1

How does Mountain Sagebrush work as a medicinal herb?

Accepted Answer

Mountain Sagebrush contains active compounds including camphor, thujone, artemisin, and flavonoids that contribute to its therapeutic effects. The essential oils demonstrate antimicrobial activity against various pathogens. Camphor provides respiratory support through expectorant and mild bronchodilatory effects, while thujone contributes to the herb's antimicrobial properties. These compounds work synergistically to produce the plant's traditional medicinal actions. Evidence level: B.

Question 2

Can Mountain Sagebrush interact with medications?

Accepted Answer

Mountain Sagebrush contains thujone, which may interact with medications metabolized by the liver, particularly those processed through cytochrome P450 enzymes. Due to thujone content, it may lower seizure threshold and should not be combined with anticonvulsant medications or other thujone-containing herbs. Individuals taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before use. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Mountain Sagebrush tea?

Accepted Answer

The traditional adult dosage for Mountain Sagebrush is 1-2 grams of dried herb prepared as a tea. Steep the dried herb in hot water for 10-15 minutes before straining. Do not exceed recommended amounts due to thujone content. This preparation has been used traditionally by Plains tribes for respiratory support. Consult a qualified herbalist for personalized guidance. Evidence level: Traditional.

Question 4

Is Mountain Sagebrush safe to use during pregnancy?

Accepted Answer

Mountain Sagebrush is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be strictly avoided. The herb contains thujone, a compound with uterine-stimulating properties that may cause miscarriage or premature labor. Thujone also crosses the placental barrier and may affect fetal development. Breastfeeding individuals should likewise avoid this herb. Women of childbearing age should use reliable contraception while using this herb. Evidence level: B.

Question 5

What are the side effects of Mountain Sagebrush?

Accepted Answer

Mountain Sagebrush may cause gastrointestinal upset including nausea, stomach discomfort, or diarrhea in some individuals. The thujone content poses risks of mild toxicity, with symptoms including headache, dizziness, or in rare cases, seizures at high doses. Individuals with epilepsy should avoid this herb entirely due to thujone's potential to lower seizure threshold. Discontinue use if adverse effects occur. Evidence level: B.

Question 6

What did Native American tribes use Mountain Sagebrush for traditionally?

Accepted Answer

Mountain Sagebrush holds significant cultural and medicinal importance for Plains tribes including the Blackfoot and Lakota. The Blackfoot used it ceremonially as a sacred herb, while the Lakota employed it for purification rituals. Various Plains tribes traditionally used it as a smudging herb for spiritual cleansing. Medicinally, it was used for respiratory conditions and as an antimicrobial agent. Evidence level: Traditional.
