Royal Sun Agaricus (Agaricus blazei): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Agaricus blazei work to boost the immune system?

Agaricus blazei contains exceptionally high levels of beta-glucans, which bind to specific receptors on immune cells including macrophages and natural killer cells. This binding activates these cells, enhancing their ability to identify and destroy pathogens and abnormal cells. The mushroom also contains blazein, a protein that may induce apoptosis in cancer cells, and ergosterol with potential anti-tumor properties. These compounds work synergistically to modulate and stimulate immune function. Evidence Level: C.

Can I take Royal Sun Agaricus with chemotherapy or other medications?

Agaricus blazei may interact with immunosuppressant medications, potentially reducing their effectiveness due to its immune-stimulating properties. Patients on chemotherapy should consult their oncologist, as the immune-enhancing effects may theoretically interfere with certain cancer treatments. Additionally, this mushroom may enhance the effects of antidiabetic medications, requiring careful blood glucose monitoring. Due to reported liver enzyme elevations, avoid combining with hepatotoxic drugs. Always inform your healthcare provider of all supplements. Evidence Level: C.

What is the recommended dosage for Agaricus blazei mushroom extract?

The standard adult dosage for Royal Sun Agaricus extract is 1-3 grams daily, typically divided into two doses. Standardized extracts are preferred over raw mushroom powder for better beta-glucan bioavailability. For general immune support, 1 gram daily may be sufficient, while cancer support protocols often use 2-3 grams daily. Start with a lower dose to assess tolerance, as higher amounts may cause gastrointestinal upset. Evidence Level: C/Traditional.

Is Agaricus blazei safe to take during pregnancy or while breastfeeding?

Agaricus blazei is considered unsafe during pregnancy and breastfeeding. The mushroom's potent immune-stimulating properties may pose risks to fetal development, and safety data for pregnant or nursing women is insufficient. Additionally, the presence of agaritine, a compound with potential carcinogenic concerns at high doses, warrants avoidance during these vulnerable periods. Women who are pregnant, nursing, or planning pregnancy should avoid this supplement entirely. Evidence Level: D.

Can people with autoimmune diseases take Royal Sun Agaricus mushroom?

Individuals with autoimmune diseases such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, or multiple sclerosis should avoid Agaricus blazei. The mushroom's potent immune-stimulating beta-glucans may activate immune cells excessively, potentially worsening autoimmune symptoms or triggering flare-ups. This contraindication applies to all medicinal mushrooms with significant immunomodulatory effects. Patients with autoimmune conditions should consult a qualified healthcare provider before considering any immune-supporting supplements. Evidence Level: C.

Résumé

Agaricus blazei Murrill (ABM), also known as 'Cogumelo do Sol' or 'Himematsutake', is a Brazilian basidiomycete fungus used for therapeutic and medicinal purposes [PMID:24288568, PMID:18317543].

Contexte

ABM is an edible and medicinal mushroom native to Brazil and widely cultivated in Japan [PMID:18317543, PMID:21709013]. It is utilized as a source of molecules for pharmacological interest and in the development of functional foods [PMID:34022313].

Usages traditionnels

Traditionally used to treat atherosclerosis, hepatitis, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, dermatitis, and cancer [PMID:18317543]. In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed to expel wind and cold [PMID:38776247].

Composés actifs

Bioactive substances include polysaccharides (specifically β-1,3-glucan with β-1,6-glucose residues), lipids (including ergosterol and sterols), proteins, vitamins B, C, and D, phenolic compounds, and unique sterol compounds called blazeispirol [PMID:23704809, PMID:36387602, PMID:38621961].

Mécanisme d'action

ABM may exert antitumor and immunostimulant properties through an opsonizing biochemical pathway [PMID:18317543]. It has been shown to inhibit the expression of Axl receptors and immune checkpoint molecules in lung cancer cells [PMID:34436128]. The compound blazein induces apoptosis in human lung and stomach cancer cells via DNA fragmentation [PMID:19020714].

Preuve DDiabetes

Ethyl acetate extracts showed significant glucose-lowering activity and α-glucosidase inhibition in vitro, comparable to metformin [PMID:31993159].

Preuve DImmune System

In vitro and in vivo research demonstrates immunomodulating properties and influence on the innate immune system [PMID:21128829, PMID:23704809].
