Question 1

How does Tribulus terrestris work in the body?

Accepted Answer

Tribulus terrestris contains steroidal saponins, particularly protodioscin, which are considered the primary active compounds. These saponins may influence hormone pathways by affecting luteinizing hormone signaling and androgen receptor activity. The herb also contains flavonoids and alkaloids that contribute to its diuretic and cardioprotective effects. While traditional use spans centuries, the exact molecular mechanisms remain incompletely understood and require further research (Evidence Level: B).

Question 2

Does Tribulus interact with any medications?

Accepted Answer

Yes, Tribulus terrestris has several clinically significant interactions. It may enhance the effects of diabetes medications, potentially causing hypoglycemia. Due to its diuretic properties, Tribulus should not be combined with lithium, as it can alter lithium excretion and increase toxicity risk. Individuals taking hormone medications or those with hormone-sensitive conditions should avoid Tribulus. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining Tribulus with prescription medications.

Question 3

What is the recommended dosage for Tribulus terrestris?

Accepted Answer

The standard adult dosage for Tribulus terrestris is 250-750mg of a standardized extract daily, standardized to 45-60% saponins. Standardization ensures consistent levels of protodioscin, the primary active compound. Dosage may vary based on the specific product formulation and intended use. Start at the lower end of the dosage range and follow manufacturer instructions. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing guidance.

Question 4

Is Tribulus terrestris safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Accepted Answer

No, Tribulus terrestris is considered unsafe during pregnancy. The herb contains compounds that may affect hormone levels and uterine function, posing potential risks to fetal development. Due to insufficient safety data and its traditional effects on reproductive hormones, pregnant women should avoid Tribulus supplements entirely. Breastfeeding women should also avoid Tribulus unless specifically directed by a healthcare provider, as safety during lactation has not been established.

Question 5

Does Tribulus terrestris actually increase testosterone levels?

Accepted Answer

Despite widespread marketing claims, clinical evidence for Tribulus increasing testosterone is mixed and inconclusive. While some studies suggest potential benefits for libido and male vitality, well-designed human trials have generally not demonstrated significant testosterone elevation (Evidence Level: B). The herb may support aspects of male reproductive health through other mechanisms, but individuals seeking testosterone support should not rely solely on Tribulus and should consult a healthcare provider for evidence-based options.

Question 6

Can Tribulus help prevent kidney stones?

Accepted Answer

Tribulus terrestris has a long history of use in Ayurvedic and Traditional Chinese Medicine for urinary tract health and kidney stone prevention. Its diuretic properties may help increase urine output and potentially reduce the concentration of stone-forming minerals. Preliminary research suggests possible benefits, though robust clinical trials remain limited (Evidence Level: Traditional). Individuals with kidney stones should consult a healthcare provider before using Tribulus therapeutically.
