Vigna unguiculata (Vigna unguiculata): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Vigna unguiculata help prevent anemia?

Vigna unguiculata (cowpea) supports anemia prevention primarily through its rich iron and B-vitamin content, particularly folate and vitamin B6. These nutrients serve as essential cofactors in hemoglobin synthesis and red blood cell production. The legume also contains flavonoids that may enhance iron absorption by reducing oxidative stress in the digestive tract. Additionally, the significant protein content supports overall tissue repair and oxygen transport. Evidence Level: C (based on nutritional analysis and traditional use data).

Does Vigna unguiculata interact with any medications?

There are no documented significant drug interactions for Vigna unguiculata in the scientific literature. As a food-grade legume consumed widely across Africa and other regions, it has an established safety profile. However, the iron content could theoretically affect absorption of certain medications, such as thyroid hormone replacement or tetracycline antibiotics, if consumed in large quantities simultaneously. Patients on iron-regulating medications should maintain consistent dietary patterns. Evidence Level: C. Consult a healthcare provider for personalized guidance.

What is the recommended dosage for Vigna unguiculata?

Vigna unguiculata is primarily consumed as a food rather than a concentrated supplement. Traditional use and nutritional guidelines suggest incorporating cooked cowpea beans regularly into the diet, typically one-half to one cup of cooked beans daily as part of a balanced diet. This provides approximately 10-15 grams of protein along with significant iron, zinc, and B vitamins. No standardized medicinal extract dosage has been established. Evidence Level: C (based on traditional use and nutritional data).

Is Vigna unguiculata safe during pregnancy?

Yes, Vigna unguiculata is considered safe during pregnancy when consumed as a thoroughly cooked food. The legume provides essential nutrients beneficial for pregnancy, including iron for preventing maternal anemia, folate for fetal neural tube development, and quality protein for tissue growth. Traditional African diets have included cowpeas throughout pregnancy for generations without documented adverse effects. Ensure beans are properly cooked to eliminate potential bacterial contamination. Evidence Level: C (traditional use and nutritional safety data).

What are the health benefits of Vigna unguiculata?

Vigna unguiculata offers multiple health benefits as a nutrient-dense legume. It supports digestive health through dietary fiber content, helps prevent anemia via significant iron and B-vitamin levels, and provides high-quality plant protein for muscle maintenance and tissue repair. The flavonoids present offer antioxidant properties that may help reduce oxidative stress. Traditional African medicine uses cowpea for digestive complaints and as a general nutritive tonic. Evidence Level: C (supported by nutritional analysis and traditional use).

Résumé

Vigna unguiculata, commonly known as cowpea, is a globally cultivated legume valued for its high nutritional content and resilience to hot, drought-prone environments [PMID:31109137, PMID:31017340].

Contexte

Cowpea is a multipurpose legume crop essential for food and nutritional security, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa and semi-arid regions [PMID:31109137, PMID:31017340, PMID:27375632]. It is characterized by its ability to fix nitrogen symbiotically and its tolerance to low rainfall and low fertilization requirements [PMID:31109137].

Usages traditionnels

In Senegal, cowpea is a key feature of family farming systems and is used for economic, nutritional, and food security purposes [PMID:35123533].

Composés actifs

Cowpea contains soluble and insoluble dietary fibers, phytochemicals, proteins, and peptides [PMID:29656381]. Specific phytochemical analysis of the pods has identified flavonoids, carotenoids, alkaloids, and opioid α-N-Normethadol [PMID:36576750]. Other identified metabolites include 3-(all-trans-nonaprenyl)benzene-1,2-diol, N-tetracosanoylphytosphingosine, and sitoindoside II [PMID:35415674].

Mécanisme d'action

Proposed mechanisms for the prevention of chronic diseases are attributed to the presence of dietary fibers, phytochemicals, proteins, and peptides [PMID:29656381].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve CChronic Diseases (General)

Cowpea is reported to have anti-diabetic, anti-cancer, anti-hyperlipidemic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-hypertensive properties, although results for anti-cancer and anti-inflammatory effects have been conflicting [PMID:29656381]

Preuve DBacterial Infections

Methanolic extracts of cowpea pods demonstrated antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. pyogenes, and P. aeruginosa with a MIC of 100 μg/mL [PMID:36576750]

Sécurité et effets indésirables

Cowpea seeds contain a number of recognized allergens and 131 potential allergenic proteins have been identified via in silico analysis [PMID:41631292]. Prick tests and specific IgE levels to cowpea were positive in several children with legume allergies [PMID:36564874].

Synthèse des preuves

The available evidence consists primarily of agricultural, genomic, and phytochemical research (Level D), with one review (Level C) summarizing general health benefits. There are no RCTs or meta-analyses regarding clinical therapeutic use in humans.
