Yin Yang Huo Complex (Epimedium brevicornum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Yin Yang Huo work in the body?

Yin Yang Huo (Epimedium brevicornum) works primarily through icariin, its main active compound. Icariin functions as a phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitor, which increases nitric oxide availability and relaxes smooth muscle tissue, improving blood flow. Additionally, it exhibits androgenic effects that may support testosterone synthesis. These mechanisms align with its traditional use in Korean medicine for male vitality and Kidney yang fortification (Evidence Level C).

Does Epimedium brevicornum interact with medications?

Yes, Epimedium brevicornum has potential drug interactions. Because icariin acts similarly to PDE5 inhibitors, combining it with nitrates or antihypertensive drugs may cause hypotension (dangerously low blood pressure). Due to its influence on hormone levels, it may interact with hormone replacement therapies or birth control pills. Patients taking heart medications or those with hormone-sensitive conditions should consult a physician before use.

What is the recommended dosage for Yin Yang Huo Complex?

The standard adult dosage for Yin Yang Huo Complex is 500-1000mg of a standardized extract taken daily. For best results, select extracts standardized to icariins, the primary active constituents. Dosage requirements can vary based on individual tolerance and the specific product concentration. Users should adhere to product label instructions or seek guidance from a qualified medical herbalist.

Is Yin Yang Huo safe to take during pregnancy?

No, Yin Yang Huo is considered unsafe during pregnancy. The herb contains compounds with androgenic properties that may disrupt hormonal balance essential for fetal development. It is strictly contraindicated for pregnant women and those breastfeeding. Furthermore, individuals with hormone-sensitive conditions, such as breast or prostate cancer, should avoid this supplement due to potential estrogenic and androgenic activity.

Can Epimedium brevicornum help with low testosterone?

Epimedium brevicornum is traditionally used as a male tonic to support testosterone levels and sexual function. Preclinical research suggests icariin may stimulate testosterone synthesis pathways, but robust human clinical trials are currently lacking (Evidence Level C). While it is a popular natural option for male vitality, it should not replace prescribed testosterone therapies without medical supervision.

What are the side effects of Epimedium?

Reported side effects of Epimedium include tachycardia (rapid heart rate) and gastrointestinal upset, such as nausea or stomach discomfort. These reactions are often associated with higher doses. Due to its cardiovascular effects, individuals with existing heart rhythm disorders or tachycardia should avoid this herb. Users experiencing palpitations should discontinue use immediately.

Résumé

Epimedium brevicornum Maxim is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb used primarily for treating sexual dysfunction, osteoporosis, and various chronic inflammatory conditions [PMID:36249817, 19476698].

Contexte

Epimedium brevicornum Maxim (also known as Epimedii Folium) is a plant used in Oriental and traditional Chinese medicine, often associated with 'warming the kidney to invigorate yang' [PMID:36249817, 38462913].

Usages traditionnels

It has a history of utilization in Chinese traditional medicine for the treatment of bone diseases, sexual dysfunction, and osteoporosis [PMID:40089686, 36249817].

Composés actifs

The main active ingredient is the flavonoid icariin [PMID:37344941, 37660725]. Other bioactive constituents include Icariside II (a principal metabolite of icariin), icaritin, epimedin A, B, and C, epimedokoreanin B, and various polysaccharides [PMID:37331450, 19476698, 40846097, 37979377].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include the inhibition of phosphodiesterase 5 (PDE5) [PMID:33137431, 29101001], activation of the Nrf2/ARE pathway to inhibit ferroptosis [PMID:39068256], modulation of macrophage polarization [PMID:37331450], and regulation of the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway [PMID:40089686]. It also promotes estrogen biosynthesis via aromatase (CYP19) and exerts estrogenic actions through estrogen receptors (ERs) in osteoblasts [PMID:23261485, 37421324].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve DSexual Dysfunction

Treatment significantly increased serum testosterone and nitric oxide (NO) levels and improved sexual organs weights and behaviors in male mice compared to other medicinal materials [PMID:29987881]. It also elicited a significant increase in penile intracavernous pressure (ICP) in rats [PMID:16527595].

Preuve DOsteoporosis

Extracts and polysaccharides from E. brevicornum prevent estrogen-deficiency-induced and glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis in rats and in vitro by promoting osteoblast proliferation and differentiation [PMID:16413840, 31751710]. It also alleviates diabetes-induced osteoporosis by regulating the AGE-RAGE pathway [PMID:40089686].

Preuve DCognitive Deficits

Icariin attenuated learning and memory deficits induced by d-galactose in rats by elevating mRNA and protein expressions of BDNF and TrkB in the hippocampus [PMID:20566405].

Preuve DTriple Negative Breast Cancer

Epimedokoreanin B inhibited tumor progression in mouse models by targeting the MCOLN1/TRPML1 channel, blocking autophagic flux and triggering apoptosis [PMID:40846097].

Preuve DAtherosclerosis

Icariin reduced endothelial atherosclerotic plaque area and collagen fibers in aortic sinus tissue of atherosclerotic mice by promoting autophagy [PMID:37344941].

Synthèse des preuves

The current evidence is primarily based on in vitro studies and animal models (Level D), demonstrating significant potential for treating sexual dysfunction, bone loss, and various inflammatory or degenerative conditions, though human clinical trials are not provided in the source abstracts.
