Bergamot Orange Peel (Citrus bergamia): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does bergamot lower cholesterol?

Bergamot contains unique polyphenols, including brutieridin and flavonoids, that may inhibit HMG-CoA reductase, an enzyme involved in cholesterol synthesis. These compounds also appear to support healthy lipid metabolism by potentially reducing LDL oxidation and supporting normal cholesterol levels. The mechanism shares similarities with certain citrus flavonoids studied for cardiovascular health. Evidence level: C (preliminary clinical research).

Does bergamot interact with medications?

Bergamot may interact with medications metabolized by cytochrome P450 liver enzymes. The flavonoids in bergamot could potentially affect how drugs like statins, blood pressure medications, and certain antidepressants are processed. Bergamot may enhance effects of cholesterol-lowering medications. If you take prescription medications, particularly for cardiovascular conditions, consult a healthcare provider before using bergamot supplements. Evidence level: C (theoretical interactions based on constituent properties).

What is the recommended dosage for bergamot extract?

The typical adult dosage for bergamot polyphenol extract is 500-1000mg daily, often divided into two doses. For aromatherapy, bergamot essential oil is used in diffusers at standard dilution rates. Always follow product label instructions, as potency varies between formulations. Consult a qualified healthcare practitioner for personalized dosing recommendations. Evidence level: C (traditional and preliminary clinical use).

Is bergamot safe during pregnancy?

Bergamot is considered unsafe during pregnancy. The essential oil contains bergapten and other furanocoumarins that may pose risks to fetal development. Additionally, bergamot causes photosensitivity reactions that could be harmful during pregnancy. Pregnant individuals should avoid bergamot supplements and undiluted essential oil. Limited safety data exists for breastfeeding, so avoidance is generally recommended. Consult a healthcare provider before using any herbal products during pregnancy.

Why does bergamot oil cause sun sensitivity?

Bergamot essential oil contains bergapten, a furanocoumarin compound that causes severe photosensitization. When applied to skin and exposed to sunlight or UV radiation, bergapten creates a phototoxic reaction that can cause burning, blistering, and hyperpigmentation. This photosensitivity can persist for days after topical application. Never apply undiluted bergamot oil to skin before sun exposure. Evidence level: C (well-documented adverse effect).

What is bergamot used for in herbal medicine?

Bergamot peel has been traditionally used in Italian herbal medicine for digestive support and as the characteristic flavoring in Earl Grey tea. Modern research has explored bergamot polyphenols for cardiovascular and cholesterol-supporting properties. In aromatherapy tradition, bergamot essential oil is used for anxiety and stress relief. Italian folk medicine historically used bergamot for skin tanning, though this carries significant photosensitivity risks. Evidence level: C (preliminary research and traditional use).

Résumé

Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) is a Mediterranean citrus fruit used for its essential oils and extracts to manage lipid profiles and psychological stress [PMID:27747942, PMID:35988871].

Contexte

Citrus bergamia, also known as Bergamot, is a plant in the Rutaceae family and a hybrid of lemon and bitter orange, endemic to the Calabria region of southern Italy [PMID:25784877, PMID:27747942].

Usages traditionnels

Traditional uses include improving cardiovascular function and immune response [PMID:31057945].

Composés actifs

Active compounds include polyphenols, flavanone glycosides, and essential oil constituents such as limonene, linalool, and linalyl acetate [PMID:31482231, PMID:42279740]. It also contains furocoumarins (psoralens) such as bergapten (xanthotoxin), as well as brutieridin and melitidin [PMID:6397734, PMID:31057945].

Mécanisme d'action

Polyphenols from bergamot may alter the function of pancreatic cholesterol ester hydrolase (pCEH) and AMPK [PMID:31057945]. Inhalation of bergamot essential oil (BEO) is reported to activate glutamatergic projections from the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) to GABAergic neurons in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) to exert anxiolytic effects in mice [PMID:39487959]. Bergamot polysaccharides may relieve colitis by promoting beneficial bacteria (Bifidobacteria, Butyrivibrio, and Blautia) and increasing short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) and L-phenylalanine [PMID:37820919].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve AHypercholesterolemia/Dyslipidemia

Orally administered bergamot can reduce total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) [PMID:31057945, PMID:35988871].

Preuve BPsychological Stress and Sleep

BEO aromatherapy is considered safe and useful for reducing stress symptoms [PMID:27747942]. In a randomized crossover trial, BEO spray used before bedtime and upon awakening was evaluated for improving sleep quality and reducing stress, anxiety, and depression [PMID:37625623].

Preuve BAnxiety (Surgical ICU Patients)

Inhalation of bergamot oil on pillows for two nights significantly reduced anxiety scores [PMID:38490827].

Preuve BPostmenopausal Health

Combined aromatherapy with lavender and bergamot essential oils, with or without mindfulness-based therapy, was studied for effects on menopausal symptoms, sleep quality, and serum cortisol [PMID:40378898].

Sécurité et effets indésirables

Bergamot contains furocoumarins which can cause phytophotodermatitis (erythema, bullae, and hyperpigmentation) when activated by longwave ultraviolet radiation (UVA) [PMID:6397734]. Repeated contact may lead to photocontact allergy [PMID:6397734].

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence for lipid-lowering effects is supported by network meta-analyses and clinical trials (Level A/B). Evidence for anxiolytic and sleep-improving effects is based on randomized controlled trials and reviews (Level B/C). Much of the anti-inflammatory and metabolic evidence remains preclinical (Level D).
