Coix Lacryma-Jobi Var (Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen work in the body?

Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen contains active compounds including coixenolide, coixol, and polysaccharides that contribute to its anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects. In traditional Korean medicine (Hanbang), it works by strengthening the spleen and removing 'dampness' from the body, which is associated with fluid retention and inflammatory conditions. The fatty acids and amino acids may also support tissue repair and metabolic function. Evidence level: C, based on preliminary research and traditional use.

Does Coix lacryma-jobi interact with any medications?

There are currently no well-documented drug interactions for Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen in clinical literature. However, due to limited research, individuals taking diuretics, immunosuppressants, or blood sugar-lowering medications should consult a healthcare provider before use, as theoretical interactions may exist based on the herb's physiological effects. Always inform your healthcare provider about all herbal supplements you are taking. Evidence level: C, based on limited clinical data.

What is the recommended dosage for Coix lacryma-jobi seeds?

The typical adult dosage for Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen is 30-60 grams daily, traditionally prepared as cooked rice porridge (juk) or brewed as tea. The seeds should be thoroughly cooked before consumption to improve digestibility and reduce potential anti-nutritional compounds. Dosage may vary based on individual constitution and the specific condition being addressed. Consult a qualified herbalist for personalized recommendations. Evidence level: Traditional use.

Is Coix lacryma-jobi safe to take during pregnancy?

Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen is traditionally contraindicated during pregnancy due to its potential to stimulate uterine contractions and promote fluid movement. While the seeds are consumed as food in some cultures, medicinal doses should be avoided during pregnancy. Women who are pregnant or trying to conceive should consult a qualified healthcare provider before use. Evidence level: Traditional use contraindication.

What is Coix lacryma-jobi used for in Korean traditional medicine?

In Korean traditional medicine (Hanbang), Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen is primarily used as a spleen tonic to address spleen weakness, dampness accumulation, diarrhea, joint pain, and edema. It is valued for its ability to drain dampness, strengthen digestion, and reduce inflammation. The herb is commonly prepared as porridge (Yulmu-juk) for convalescent patients and those with digestive weakness. Evidence level: C, supported by traditional use and preliminary research.

What are the side effects of taking Coix lacryma-jobi?

Coix lacryma-jobi var. ma-yuen is generally well-tolerated when consumed in recommended amounts. Potential side effects include constipation with overuse and mild digestive upset in sensitive individuals. It should be avoided by those with very dry conditions or existing constipation, as its drying properties may worsen these conditions. Proper cooking of the seeds reduces the risk of digestive discomfort. Evidence level: Traditional use documentation.

Contexte

Adlay is an annual herbal plant in the Poaceae family, closely related to maize and sorghum, and is cultivated as both a cereal and medicinal crop in Asia [PMID:32528499, 36618703].

Usages traditionnels

It has been used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and as a nourishing food for the treatment of warts, chapped skin, rheumatism, neuralgia, inflammatory, and neoplastic diseases, as well as for stomachic, diuretic, antipholgistic, anodynic, and antispasmodic effects [PMID:24716141, 31729992].

Composés actifs

Active components include polyphenols, flavonoids, phytosterols (stigmasterol, β-sitosterol), amino acids, proteins, polysaccharides, and specific compounds such as coixol, coixenolide, lactams, and hydroxy unsaturated fatty acids (e.g., 9-E,E-HODE) [PMID:36618703, 37631186, 31010220, 19336916].

Mécanisme d'action

Mechanisms include scavenging reactive oxygen species and electrophiles, enhancing Nrf2-mediated detoxification [PMID:24716141], activating the p-AMPK/p-ACC pathway to improve lipid metabolism [PMID:36214059], inhibiting angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) activity [PMID:28098801], and inducing cell cycle arrest (G0/G1 phase) and apoptosis via downregulation of CDK4/Cyclin D1 [PMID:35807238].
