Dioscorea elephantipes
Calculateur gratuit de posologie — doses adultes et enfants selon le poids.
Dioscorea elephantipes contains steroidal saponins, particularly diosgenin, which are thought to be the primary active compounds responsible for its effects. In laboratory settings, diosgenin has demonstrated the ability to modulate inflammatory pathways. The plant also contains tannins, which provide astringent qualities. However, specific mechanisms of action have not been thoroughly investigated in human clinical trials (Evidence Level C), and current understanding relies heavily on phytochemical analysis and traditional use.
Currently, there are no specific drug interactions documented for Dioscorea elephantipes in scientific literature. However, because the herb contains diosgenin and steroidal saponins, there is a theoretical potential for interaction with hormonal medications or hormone replacement therapies. Patients taking prescription medications should consult a healthcare provider before adding herbal supplements to their regimen. Evidence regarding interactions remains limited (Evidence Level C).
For traditional food use, the tuber must be cooked thoroughly before consumption. As a medicinal tincture, the standard adult dosage is typically 1 to 2 ml taken twice daily. These recommendations are based on traditional South African usage and general herbal compounding standards rather than standardized clinical trials (Evidence Level C). Users should adhere to recommended amounts to minimize the risk of mild gastrointestinal side effects.
Dioscorea elephantipes is traditionally consumed as a food source and is generally regarded as safe when properly prepared. However, the presence of diosgenin—a compound often associated with hormonal activity—warrants caution. While some sources list it as safe, medical herbalists typically recommend avoiding medicinal doses of saponin-rich herbs during pregnancy unless directed by a qualified professional. Evidence regarding pregnancy safety is limited (Evidence Level C).
Dioscorea elephantipes is a traditional Khoikhoi plant used historically as a famine food and medicinal resource. In South African folk medicine, the tuber is primarily used to support digestion and treat various digestive conditions. It is also recognized for its anti-inflammatory properties. While these ethnobotanical uses are well-documented, modern clinical evidence supporting these specific indications remains limited (Evidence Level C).
