Herb Robert (Geranium robertianum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Herb Robert stop bleeding?

Herb Robert contains significant levels of tannins and the compound geraniin, which provide strong astringent properties. These compounds help constrict blood vessels and tissues at the wound site, reducing blood flow and promoting clotting. This astringent action is what gives the herb its traditional blood-staunching reputation for treating nosebleeds and minor wounds. The organic germanium content may also support tissue repair. Evidence level: C (preliminary evidence and traditional use).

Can Herb Robert interact with blood thinning medications?

Yes, Herb Robert should be avoided by those taking anticoagulant medications such as warfarin, heparin, or aspirin therapy. The herb's astringent tannins and potential effects on blood clotting may enhance the action of blood thinners, increasing the risk of bleeding complications. If you are on anticoagulant therapy, consult a qualified healthcare provider before using Herb Robert or any herbal preparations. Evidence level: C.

What is the correct dosage for Herb Robert tea?

The typical adult dosage for Herb Robert is 2-4 grams of dried herb prepared as a tea, taken up to three times daily. To prepare, steep the dried herb in freshly boiled water for 10-15 minutes before straining. This traditional dosage has been used for digestive complaints, kidney support, and minor bleeding issues. Always start with the lower dose to assess individual tolerance. Evidence level: C/Traditional.

Is Herb Robert safe to take during pregnancy?

Herb Robert is contraindicated during pregnancy and should be avoided. Despite some sources suggesting safety, the herb's astringent tannins and potential effects on blood clotting pose theoretical risks during pregnancy. There is insufficient safety data for use while breastfeeding. Pregnant and nursing individuals should consult a qualified healthcare practitioner before using any herbal remedies. Evidence level: C.

What is Herb Robert used for?

Herb Robert is traditionally used for wound healing, treating diarrhea, supporting kidney function, and stopping nosebleeds. Its astringent tannins make it valuable for conditions involving excess bleeding or discharge. The herb also contains antioxidant compounds including ellagic acid and organic germanium, which may provide cellular protection and support immune function. These uses are primarily supported by traditional knowledge and preliminary research. Evidence level: C.

What are the side effects of Herb Robert?

Herb Robert is generally well-tolerated when used at recommended doses. The most commonly reported side effect is mild gastrointestinal upset, though this is rare. The herb's distinctive pungent odor may be unpleasant to some users but does not indicate harm. As with any herb, discontinue use if you experience any adverse reactions and consult a healthcare professional. No serious adverse effects have been documented in traditional use. Evidence level: C/Traditional.
