Camarine norvégienne (Empetrum nigrum): Benefits, Dosage, Safety & Evidence

Questions fréquentes

How does Norwegian crowberry work as a urinary tonic?

Norwegian crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) exerts its urinary tonic effects primarily through its rich anthocyanin and flavonoid content, including quercetin and catechins. These compounds provide antioxidant protection to urinary tract tissues, potentially reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. The berry also contains ellagic acid and tannins that offer mild astringent properties, which may help tone the urinary mucosa and support healthy bladder function. This traditional mechanism aligns with its centuries of use in Norse folk medicine for urinary complaints. Evidence Level: C (preliminary evidence based on constituent analysis).

Does Norwegian crowberry interact with any medications?

There are currently no established drug interactions for Norwegian crowberry. The berry's primary active compounds—anthocyanins, quercetin, catechins, and ellagic acid—are commonly found in many edible berries and have no documented pharmaceutical interactions. However, due to limited clinical research (Evidence Level C), individuals taking prescription medications, particularly blood thinners or diuretics, should consult a healthcare provider before using concentrated extracts. Traditional food consumption has not demonstrated significant interaction risks in Nordic populations.

What is the recommended dosage of Norwegian crowberry?

The traditional adult dosage for Norwegian crowberry is 10-20 grams of fresh berries daily, or 2-3 grams of dried berries prepared as a tea. To make a tea, steep the dried berries in hot water for 10-15 minutes to extract the beneficial anthocyanins and flavonoids. This dosage may be taken once or twice daily for urinary or digestive support. As research remains limited (Evidence Level C), these recommendations are based on traditional Nordic usage and should be personalized with healthcare provider guidance.

Is Norwegian crowberry safe to take during pregnancy?

Norwegian crowberry is considered safe during pregnancy when consumed in normal food amounts. The berry has a long history of use as a traditional food source in Nordic countries without documented adverse effects on pregnancy outcomes. Unlike some medicinal herbs, crowberry contains no known uterine stimulants or compounds harmful to fetal development. Pregnant women should limit intake to food-level doses (10-20g fresh berries) and avoid concentrated extracts. Always consult a qualified healthcare provider before using any herbal supplement during pregnancy. Safety rating: Traditional use supports safety.

What are the health benefits of Norwegian crowberry?

Norwegian crowberry has been traditionally used for urinary tract support and treating diarrhea in Nordic folk medicine. The berry contains significant antioxidant compounds including anthocyanins, quercetin, ellagic acid, and catechins, which may help reduce oxidative stress and support cellular health. Its astringent properties make it useful for digestive complaints, while the nutritional profile provides vitamins and minerals. Current evidence (Level C) is based primarily on traditional use and phytochemical analysis rather than clinical trials. More research is needed to confirm specific therapeutic benefits.

Résumé

Norwegian Crowberry (Empetrum nigrum) is a northern hemisphere dwarf shrub characterized by high antioxidant activity and a rich profile of polyphenols [PMID:27941619, PMID:26980998].

Contexte

Empetrum nigrum is a wild berry and foundation species found in northern boreal forests and alpine ecosystems [PMID:26980998, PMID:39279794]. It is known to accumulate heavy metals in its stems and leaves when growing in polluted areas [PMID:11814873, PMID:11291448].

Usages traditionnels

Crowberry is used in folk medicine and as an herbal medicine to control inflammatory diseases and reestablish antioxidant enzyme activity [PMID:27396205, PMID:35698073].

Composés actifs

The plant contains flavonols (quercetin, rutin, myricetin, naringenin, naringin, morin, and kaempferol), anthocyanins (primarily cyanidin-3-galactoside and delphinidin-3-galactoside), and total polyphenols [PMID:27941619, PMID:18522397, PMID:33915384]. Other isolated compounds include the triterpenoid nigrumol A [PMID:34030545], the flavonoid monomer 2',4'-dihydroxychalcone [PMID:40902362], various dihydrochalcones [PMID:33949278, PMID:30584772], a bibenzyl [PMID:31794330], and empetroxepins A and B [PMID:36038118].

Mécanisme d'action

The herb exhibits antioxidant activity by scavenging free radicals (DPPH, ABTS) and inhibiting lipid peroxidation [PMID:27941619, PMID:20077224, PMID:26197528]. Specifically, 2',4'-dihydroxychalcone induces ferroptosis in cholangiocarcinoma cells via the ERO1A/GPX4 regulatory axis [PMID:40902362], while other extracts inhibit $\alpha$-glucosidase activity and suppress pro-inflammatory mediators [PMID:26980998].

Preuves cliniques

Preuve BSkin barrier dysfunction

A split-face clinical study using a combination of Empetrum nigrum fruit juice and Betula alba bark extract showed significantly better skin restructuring and corneocyte cohesion compared to placebo [PMID:36293365]

Preuve DCholangiocarcinoma (In vitro)

Crowberry extracts inhibited cell proliferation and migration through the inhibition of DEK and Akt signaling [PMID:35698073]

Preuve DAngiogenesis (In vitro/In vivo)

Ethanol extracts of E. nigrum var. japonicum significantly inhibited tube formation and proliferation of HUVECs and showed antiangiogenic activity in chick embryo CAM assays [PMID:27396205]

Synthèse des preuves

Evidence is primarily based on in vitro, in vivo animal/cell models, and one small clinical study. While strong antioxidant and anti-tumor activities are observed in laboratory settings, high-level clinical evidence (Meta-analyses/RCTs) is lacking.
