Apis mellifera product
Resinous bee product with broad-spectrum antimicrobial and immunomodulatory properties.
Propolis is a resinous bee product containing over 300 bioactive compounds, notably caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE), pinocembrin, galangin, and artepillin C. It is primarily used for wound healing, oral infections, and immune support, with modern research focusing on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and anticancer (especially CAPE) properties. Evidence is limited (Level C), but preliminary clinical and laboratory studies support its traditional applications.
CAPE inhibits nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), reducing pro-inflammatory cytokine production. Pinocembrin and galangin disrupt bacterial cell membranes and inhibit biofilm formation, while artepillin C induces apoptosis in cancer cells via caspase-3/9 activation and mitochondrial depolarization. Propolis also modulates macrophage activity, enhancing phagocytosis and balancing Th1/Th2 immune responses.
